THE ocular complications of mumps are rare, the commonest being dacryoadenitis, which is usually bilateral and begins with sudden pain in the orbits, chemosis of the bulbar conjunctiva, and enlarged tense painful lacrimal glands. In its milder form it is called mumps conjunctivitis (Lippmann, 1943; Villard, Viallefont, and Teyssier, 1937; Galpine and Walkowski, 1952). Other complications are ra...
PURPOSE Previous studies have implicated androgens and one or more as yet unknown pituitary or pituitary-dependent factors in the regulation of certain lacrimal gland functions. Many observations suggest that prolactin (PRL) might well be one of these factors. This study was designed to determine the effect of hypophysectomy on biochemical markers of exorbital lacrimal gland secretory capacity ...
A 43-year-old woman with diplopia had a disconjugate gaze on physical examination. MR images revealed enlarged, abnormally enhancing extraocular muscles and lacrimal glands bilaterally. Biopsy results were consistent with sarcoidosis. Chest radiographs and CT scans were normal. Clinical and MR findings improved after appropriate medical therapy.
Purpose: To investigate the short-term (1 week) and long-term (8 weeks) protective effects of zinc administration on radioiodine (RAI)-induced lacrimal gland damage of rats. Methods: A total of 40 rats were divided into two groups: an RAI group (n=20), which was administrated a single dose of 3 mCi of 131I and 1 mL physiologic saline for 7 days by gastric gavage, and a zinc group (n=20), whic...
Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of topical rapamycin in treating autoimmune dacryoadenitis in a mouse model of Sjögren's syndrome. Methods We developed rapamycin in a poly(ethylene glycol)-distearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (PEG-DSPE) micelle formulation to maintain solubility. Rapamycin or PEG-DSPE eye drops (vehicle) were administered in a well-established Sjögren's syndrome disease model...
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of viral IL-10 on the lacrimal gland immunopathologic response in the ocular surface disease, induced autoimmune dacryoadenitis. METHODS Disease was induced in rabbits by injecting inferior lacrimal glands with peripheral blood lymphocytes activated by 5 days of coculture with autologous acinar cells in a mixed-cell reaction. In the treated group, an adenoviral ...
PURPOSE To establish a rabbit model for keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) to study autologous submandibular gland transfer for treating severe KCS. METHODS In 2 groups of 10 rabbits, left eyes were operated and right eyes were controls. In the trichloroacetic acid-treated group, the lacrimal and harderian glands and nictitating membrane were removed surgically; the palpebral and bulbar conjunc...
We have previously suggested that fluid flow in the mouse exorbital lacrimal gland is driven by the opening of apical Cl- and K+ channels. These ions move into the lumen of the gland and water follows by osmosis. In many tissues, the Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC1) replaces the Cl- and K+ ions that move into the lumen. We hypothesize that mouse exorbital lacrimal glands would have NKCC1 co-tr...
Sjögren syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by diffuse lymphoid cell infiltrates in the salivary and lacrimal glands, resulting in symptoms of dry mouth and eyes due to insufficient secretion. Although it has been assumed that a combination of immunologic, genetic and environmental factors may play a key role in the development of autoimmune lesions in the salivary and lacrimal...
