During the past 2 years microbiological procedures’ have been reported for the determination in proteins of thirteen of the twenty-one amino acids which occur in protein materials. Seven amino acids (isoleucine, glutamic acid, methionine, leucine, phenylalanine, tryptophane, and valine) have been determined with Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5, three (arginine, tyrosine, and valine) with Lactobac...

BACKGROUND Enteric fever is a global health problem, and rapidly developing resistance to various drugs makes the situation more alarming. The potential use of Lactobacillus to control typhoid fever represents a promising approach, as it may exert protective actions through various mechanisms. METHODS In this study, the probiotic potential and antagonistic activities of 32 Lactobacillus isola...

Here, we report the draft genome sequences of two type strains of Lactobacillus, Lactobacillus farraginis JCM 14108(T) and Lactobacillus composti JCM 14202(T), isolated from the compost of distilled shōchū residue. Their genome information will be useful for studies of ecological and physiological functions of these Lactobacillus species.

We identified Lactobacillus isolates from Japanese women and newborn infants by a DNA-DNA hybridization method. The predominating lactobacilli were Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus gasseri in the women's vaginas and the newborns' intestines and L. gasseri and Lactobacillus fermentum in the women's intestines. All L. crispatus strains were exclusively strong H2O2 producers.

the objective of this study ware to investigate the effects of different doses of origanum vulgare on the growth of lactobacillus casei and lactobacillus paracasei (separated from iranian dairy products) in milk produced at one step. the product was then examined in terms of ph, acidity and microbe counting during incubator setting period. in the milk samples with lactobacillus casei, the contr...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from "Alheira", a fermented sausage produced in Portugal. LAB were identified to genus and species level by phenotypic characteristics, using genus or species-specific primers and sequencing of the gene encoding 16S rRNA. Two-hundred and eighty-three isolates were grouped into 1...

The objective of this study was to investigate the cultivable Lactobacillus population in adult and infant faecal material to identify strains shared across a number of individuals. A range of lactobacilli isolated on Lactobacillus-selective agar from faeces of 16 infants and 11 adults were genetically fingerprinted and further characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The relatedness of all t...

In this study, investigations into the 23S-5S rRNA intergenic spacer regions (ISRs) of the Lactobacillus casei group were performed. A 1.6 kb fragment, from Lactobacillus paracasei strain ATCC 27092, containing part of the 5S rRNA gene (60 bp), the 5S-23S spacer region (198 bp) and part of the 23S rRNA gene (1295 bp) was cloned and sequenced (GenBank no. AF098107). This fragment was used as a p...

Here, we report the extensive bioinformatic and functional analyses of the unusual pLOCK 0919, a plasmid originating from the probiotic Lactobacillus casei LOCK 0919 strain. This plasmid is atypical because it harbors the spaCBA-srtC gene cluster encoding SpaCBA pili. We show that all other spaCBA-srtC sequences of the Lactobacillus genus that have been previously described and deposited in Gen...
