In this paper we describe several diagnostics that we have developed to assist the development of high power gas phase lasers including COIL, EOIL, and DPAL. Twenty-five new, cw, FIR lines from CH(2)F(2), optically pumped by a CO(2) laser, have been found, using a variablecoupling, open-structure resonator. Accurate wavelength measurements have been made on the 47 known CH(2)F(2) lines. The new lines are fairly uniformly distributed over a wide range, from 105 to 1448 microm.

The fundamental knowledge contained in the previous paper on “Cavity control system essential modeling for TESLA linear accelerator and free electron laser” is applied for Matlabs’ Simulink implementation of the basic models for the cavity resonator. Elementary simulations of the cavity behavior are carried out and some experimental results for signals and power considerations are presented.

We analyze the physical mechanisms limiting optical fiber resonator length and report on the longest ever laser cavity, reaching 270 km, which shows a clearly resolvable mode structure with a width of approximately 120 Hz and peak separation of approximately 380 Hz in the radio-frequency spectrum.

We have demonstrated that a hybrid laser array, combining graded-photonic-heterostructure terahertz semiconductor lasers with a ring resonator, allows the relative phase (either symmetric or anti-symmetric) between the sources to be fixed by design. We have successfully phase-locked up to five separate lasers. Compared with a single device, we achieved a clear narrowing of the output beam profile.
