A controlled, reproducible, gram-scale method is reported for the covalent functionalization of graphene sheets by a one-pot nitrene [2+1] cycloaddition reaction under mild conditions. The reaction between commercially available 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and sodium azide with thermally reduced graphene oxide (TRGO) results in defined dichlorotriazine-functionalized sheets. The different re...

A sensitive and selective field-effect transistor (FET) biosensor is demonstrated using vertically-oriented graphene (VG) sheets labeled with gold nanoparticle (NP)-antibody conjugates. VG sheets are directly grown on the sensor electrode using a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method and function as the sensing channel. The protein detection is accomplished through measuring ...

We present the first angle-resolved photoemission studies of electronic structure in CaC6, a superconducting graphite intercalation compound with T_{c}=11.6 K. We find that, contrary to theoretical models, the electron-phonon coupling on the graphene-derived Fermi sheets with high-frequency graphene-derived phonons is surprisingly strong and anisotropic. The shape of the Fermi surface is found ...

Recent theoretical and experimental studies demonstrated that breaking of the sublattice symmetry in graphene produces an energy gap at the former Dirac point. We describe the synthesis of graphene sheets decorated with ultrathin, Si-rich two-dimensional (2D) islands (i.e., Gr:Si sheets), in which the electronic property of graphene is modulated by coupling with the Si-islands. Analyses based o...

Schottky barriers formed by graphene (monolayer, bilayer, and multilayer) on 2D layered semiconductor tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets are explored for solar energy harvesting. The characteristics of the graphene-WS2 Schottky junction vary significantly with the number of graphene layers on WS2, resulting in differences in solar cell performance. Compared with monolayer or stacked bilayer gr...

Graphene is considered a promising ultracapacitor material toward high power and energy density because of its high conductivity and high surface area without pore tortuosity. However, the two-dimensional (2D) sheets tend to aggregate during the electrode fabrication process and align perpendicular to the flow direction of electrons and ions, which can reduce the available surface area and limi...

We investigate a novel implementation of hyperbolic metamaterial (HM) at far-infrared frequencies composed of stacked graphene sheets separated by thin dielectric layers. Using the surface conductivity model of graphene, we derive the homogenization formula for the multilayer structure by treating graphene sheets as lumped layers with complex admittances. Homogenization results and limits are i...

Large-flake graphene membranes up to 300 microm(2) can be exfoliated from graphite by oleyl amine based on solvothermal conditions. The exfoliated graphene sheets are of high quality and have few defects. The graphene dispersion, predominantly composed of monolayer graphene, had a high concentration of 0.15 mg ml(-1), and can be stabilized against re-aggregation.

The transfer of chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown graphene is the prerequisite for many applications. Herein, we introduce a simple and eco-friendly electrochemical technique to transfer graphene using agarose gel as the solid electrolyte and a mechanical support layer for graphene sheets. This transfer technique will be a perfect candidate for the industrial applications of graphene.

Flexible graphene films were prepared by the filtration of water-soluble noncovalently functionalized graphene sheets with pyrenebutyrate. The work presented here will not only open a new way for preparing water-soluble graphene dispersions but also provide a general route for fabricating conducting films based on graphene.
