Realistic modelling and interactive rendering of forestry and landscape is a challenge in computer graphics and virtual reality. Recent new developments in plant growth modelling and simulation lead to plant models faithful to botanical structure and development, not only representing the complex architecture of a real plant but also its functioning in interaction with its environment. Complex ...

We present several notions of high-level dependence for stochastic processes, which have appeared in the literature. We calculate such measures for discrete and continuous-time models, where we concentrate on time series with heavy-tailed marginals, where extremes are likely to occur in clusters. Such models include linear models and solutions to random recurrence equations; in particular, disc...

Multi-Level Multi-Decision Models for Automatic Speech Recognition is discussed. It is hierarchically organized. Here there are not used the generative grammars for model speech signal synthesis as a feedback in speech recognition process. Instead of the latter significant decisions, but under simplified conditions, at all levels of a speech signal processing hierarchy are introduced. The 3-lev...

This paper presents a new model for structural topology optimization. We represent the structural boundary by a level set model that is embedded in a scalar function of a higher dimension. Such level set models are flexible in handling complex topological changes and are concise in describing the boundary shape of the structure. Furthermore, a gradient-based procedure leads to a numerical algor...

Hamilton's rule is regarded as a useful tool in the understanding of social evolution, but it relies on restrictive, overly simple assumptions. Here we model more realistic situations, in which the traditional Hamilton's rule generally fails to predict the direction of selection. We offer modifications that allow accurate predictions, but also show that these Hamilton's rule type inequalities d...

Level vector autoregressive (VAR) models are used extensively in empirical macroeconomic research. However, estimated level VAR models may contain explosive roots, which is at odds with the widespread consensus among macroeconomists that roots are at most unity. This paper investigates the frequency of explosive roots in estimated level VAR models in the presence of stationary and nonstationary...

of the Thesis Scheduling consists in deciding when a set of activities must be executed under different constraints, in order to optimize a given objective. The two main types of constraints are precedences between activities, and the availability of finite resources. Common objectives are to minimize the total duration, or to minimize the weighted sum of the tardiness of activities with respec...

We report here about our submissions to different music classification tasks for the MIREX 2010 evaluations. These submissions are similar to the ones sent at MIREX 2009 (see [1]), if we look at the classifiers and the main audio features. However we added high-level features (or semantic features), based on Support Vector Machine models of curated databases of different kind. We submitted two ...

Multi-level models for estimating conditional and unconditional longitudinal growth norms are presented. The procedure involves transforming the original growth measurements to Normality and modelling these with a two-level random coefficient model. Growth norms for any desired time interval and function can be derived. Height and weight data are used for illustration.
