Two subfamilies of the polar glycopeptidolipids (GPLs) located on the surface of Mycobacterium smegmatis, along with unknown phospholipids, were recently shown to participate in the nonopsonic phagocytosis of mycobacteria by human macrophages (Villeneuve, C., G. Etienne, V. Abadie, H. Montrozier, C. Bordier, F. Laval, M. Daffe, I. Maridonneau-Parini, and C. Astarie-Dequeker. 2003. Surface-expos...

Metabolomic approaches were used to elucidate some key metabolite changes occurring during interactions of Magnaporthe grisea--the cause of rice blast disease--with an alternate host, Brachypodium distachyon. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy provided a high-throughput metabolic fingerprint of M. grisea interacting with the B. distachyon accessions ABR1 (susceptible) and ABR5 (res...

Minihypers are substructures of projective spaces introduced to study linear codes meeting the Griesmer bound. Recently, many results in finite geometry were obtained by applying characterization results on minihypers [8, 17, 18]. In this paper, using characterization results on certain minihypers, we present new results on tight sets in classical finite polar spaces and weighted m-covers, and ...

0 Introduction For n 2, Let M n be a nite convex, not necessarily smooth, hypersur-face in Euclidean space R n+1 containing the origin. More precisely, M n is the boundary of some convex domain in R n+1 containing a neighborhood of the origin. We write M n = fR(x) = (x)x j x 2 S n g, where is a function from S n to R +. Let : M n ! S n denote the generalized Gauss map, namely, (Y) is the set of...

When metaphase II-arrested mouse oocytes (M II) are activated very soon after ovulation, they respond abortively by second polar body extrusion followed by another metaphase arrest (metaphase III, M III; Kubiak, 1989). The M II/M III transition resembles the natural transition between the first and second meiotic metaphases (M I/M II). We observed that a similar sequence of events takes place d...

Motivation. It is important to determine whether a candidate molecule is capable of penetrating the blood-brain barrier in drug discovery and development. The aim of this paper is to establish a predictive model for blood-brain barrier penetration only using two simple descriptors, molecular volume and polar surface area. Method. A dataset of 111 compounds is divided into a training set of 86 c...

A cross-intersecting Erdős-Ko-Rado set of generators of a finite classical polar space is a pair (Y,Z) of sets of generators such that all y ∈ Y and z ∈ Z intersect in at least a point. We provide upper bounds on |Y | · |Z| and classify the crossintersecting Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of maximum size with respect to |Y | · |Z| for all polar spaces except some Hermitian polar spaces.
