Abstract It is well known that sediment and mussel samples are commonly used for monitoring of radioactivity levels in marine ecosystem. In the present study, radioactivity concentrations of Cs, K, Th, U and Po were measured in sediment and mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) samples. The results of the present study were compared with the similar studies.

We computationally study the transport of active, self-propelled particles suspended in a two-dimensional chaotic flow. The pointlike, spherical particles have their own intrinsic swimming velocity, which modifies the dynamical system so that the particles can break the transport barriers present in the carrier flow. Surprisingly, we find that swimming does not necessarily lead to enhanced part...

Coral Reefs ecosystems have been impacted by natural and anthropogenic effects resulting in a decline of coral communities worldwide. This decline in coral reefs has an ecological and an economical impact in tourist areas and marine ecosystems due to beach activities, scuba diving, and fishing. Monitoring of coral reefs is made by marine biologists using traditionally diving techniques. The mai...

In this paper, a novel current inversion algorithm from X-band marine radar images is proposed. The routine, for which deep water is assumed, begins with 3-D FFT of the radar image sequence, followed by the extraction of the dispersion shell from the 3-D image spectrum. Next, the dispersion shell is converted to a polar current shell (PCS) using a polar coordinate transformation. After removing...

Photogrammetry is the practice of obtaining accurate and valid measurements from 2D images. This practice can be useful in applications where it is dangerous or difficult to reach the target. In recent years, this practice is becoming more common in the marine science field to measure large and potentially dangerous marine mammals. Even more recently, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technology is...

Background: Manta rays (Mobulidae), Mobula birostris and Mobula alfredi, are widely distributed in tropical and temperate waters. Still, little is known about their movements and their ecological interactions (e.g. behavior and diet). In Peru, M. birostris has only been reported along the northern shore within the Tropical East Pacific Marine Province. No official reports exist from central or ...
