A dual-templated approach for the controllable synthesis of metal cluster complexes is described. By using an acetylide-containing anion with specific geometry as a central template and a macrocyclic coordinative compound as a peripheral one, two multinuclear silver-acetylide cluster-encapsulated supramolecular boxes were synthesized.

Mass spectrometry experiments show an exceptionally weak bonding between Si7Mn(+) and rare gas atoms as compared to other exohedrally transition metal (TM) doped silicon clusters and other SinMn(+) (n = 5-10) sizes. The Si7Mn(+) cluster does not form Ar complexes and the observed fraction of Xe complexes is low. The interaction of two cluster series, SinMn(+) (n = 6-10) and Si7TM(+) (TM = Cr, M...

We report the evolution and confinement of atomically precise and luminescent gold clusters in a small protein, lysozyme (Lyz) using detailed mass spectrometric (MS) and other spectroscopic investigations. A maximum of 12 Au(0) species could be bound to a single Lyz molecule irrespective of the molar ratio of Lyz : Au(3+) used for cluster growth. The cluster-encapsulated protein also forms aggr...

Upon storage under aerobic conditions metallothioneins (MTs) form a new species, which is characterized by a molecular mass approximately twice the size of monomeric MT and shifted (113/111)Cd- and (1)H-NMR resonances. The investigation of this oxidative dimerization process by NMR spectroscopy allowed us to structurally characterize this MT species that has been described to occur in vivo and ...

Impurity elements, which have very low bulk concentrations in metals, often segregate to grain boundaries where their concentrations can be greatly enriched. As a results of this segregation, the grain boundaries are often weakened so that they become preferred paths for brittle fracture. This paper presents the results of fully quantum mechanical cluster calculations which have been applied to...

The anomalous stability of magic-number metal clusters has been associated with closed geometric and electronic shells and the opening of HOMO-LUMO gaps. Despite this enhanced stability, magic-number clusters are known to decay and react in the condensed phase to form other products. Improving our understanding of their decay mechanisms and developing strategies to control or eliminate cluster ...

We report on an element-dependent critical size for argon physisorption at 80 K on transition-metal-doped silicon clusters. Argon does not attach to elemental silicon clusters but only to surface-located transition-metal atoms. Thus physisorption provides structural information. Specifically, the minimal cluster size for the formation of endohedral singly metal-doped silicon cages has been dete...

Short carbon nanotubes have been modified selectively on one end with metal using a bulk technique based on bipolar electrochemistry. A stabilized suspension of nanotubes is introduced in a capillary containing an aqueous metal salt solution, and a high electric field is applied to orientate and polarize the individual tubes. During their transport through the capillary under sufficient polariz...
