BACKGROUND The association between depression after myocardial infarction and increased risk of mortality and cardiac morbidity may be due to cardiac disease severity. AIMS To combine original data from studies on the association between post-infarction depression and prognosis into one database, and to investigate to what extent such depression predicts prognosis independently of disease sev...

We studied the prognostic role of ventricular premature complexes occurring during 1 hour of electrocardiographic monitoring of 416 men with effort angina who had never had myocardial infarction, and compared mortality over 5 years with that of 1739 men with infarction before first observation. Multivariate analyses of survival identified the presence of ventricular premature complexes in 1 hou...

The mechanism of sepsis-induced cardiac failure was initially thought to be related to the presence of 'myocardial depressant' substances that directly alter heart function. Exosomes released by platelets and identified in the plasma are suggested to, at least partially, explain myocardial depression in sepsis. This hypothesis needs to be evaluated by clinical studies.

BACKGROUND Whether there is an association between depression at the time of acute myocardial infarction and subsequent risk of cardiac complications and death remains controversial. Most studies of this risk factor have been limited to patients of single institutions, and this might account for the varying results. We prospectively evaluated patients admitted to 5 tertiary care and 5 community...

Both the MIND-IT and the ENRICHD studies failed to show that medical outcomes of acute myocardial infarction can be improved by treating depression. However, neither study had sufficient statistical power to convincingly test this hypothesis. More effective treatments for depression will have to be developed if this hypothesis is to be tested with sufficient power in attainable samples.

In a canine preparation designed to separate myocardial from peripheral cardiovascular effects of the drug. It was found that thiopentone produced minimal depression of the heart. Only in much greater concentrations was significant depression found. It is concluded that the cardiovascular effects of thiopentone i.v. are not a direct effect on the heart.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE In unstable angina, clinical characteristics, resting electrocardiography, and early continuous ST segment monitoring have been individually reported to identify subgroups at increased risk of adverse outcome. It is not known, however, whether continuous ST monitoring provides additional prognostic information in such a setting. DESIGN Observational study of 212 patie...

The paper presents the principal psychological problems in patients following myocardial infarction. Particular emphasis has been placed on anxiety and depression following myocardial infarction and behavioural patterns adversely affecting health. A proposal of actions during cardiac rehabilitation has been presented in accordance with the severity of psychological problems encountered in the p...

The presence of ST segment depression in right-sided electrocardiographic leads has been infrequently reported in the literature. We report the cases of two patients with anterolateral and posterior myocardial infarctions with ST segment depression in right-sided electrocardiographic leads. We hypothesize that this electrocardiographic change is a reciprocal expression of ST segment elevation o...

Sepsis has high incidence and mortality rates around the world. The role of cardiac depression in myocardial dysfunction during sepsis remains to be elucidated. This review attempts to summarize our understanding of the anatomical, histopathological, and pathophysiological mechanisms behind cardiac dysfunction. Biomarkers to detect cardiac depression have been used to recognize developing probl...
