Circuit theory and microphotonic circuit design: from resonant filters to light-powered nanomachines

We describe simulation and experimental results of gratings for coupling between optical fibers and nanophotonic waveguides. The coupling strength was engineered to obtained Gaussian-like output profile. 1.2dB coupling loss is achieved to single-mode fibers. Preliminary experimental result for coupling with vertical fiber with chirped grating gives a 3dB coupling loss.
We report 50 Gbit/s modulation capability using four silicon micro ring modulators within a footprint of 500 microm(2). This review intuitively explains the fundamental trade-offs of repeated and equalized electrical interconnects for on-chip networks as referencing counterparts of emerging nanophotonic interconnects in terms of data rate density, energy per bit, and latency.
