BACKGROUND Composition of Latex Latex products are manufactured from a milky fluid derived from the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. Several chemicals are added to this fluid during the processing and manufacture of commercial latex. Some proteins in latex can cause a range of mild to severe allergic reactions. Currently available methods of measurement do not provide easy or consistent identif...

BACKGROUND Molecular allergens enable the definition of sensitization profiles in allergic patients. AIM To validate the most helpful allergens for the diagnosis of latex allergy in different clinical situations. METHODS 130 patients suspected to be allergic to latex with positive IgE against natural rubber latex (NRL) have been studied: 97 were confirmed as latex allergic (among which 55 p...

BACKGROUND Sensitization to natural rubber latex has been linked to proteins from medical latex gloves. Various assays to estimate the amount of residual allergenic proteins extractable from latex gloves to assess their potential exposure hazard have inherent weaknesses. OBJECTIVE This investigation was aimed at developing 2-site immunoenzymetric assays and identifying appropriate protein mar...

This case report documents the treatment of an endodontic patient who experienced a type 1 hypersensitivity reaction to latex. The dental, medical, and environmental aspects of treating latex allergic patients are reviewed. Because gutta-percha and latex rubber are similar compounds, the possible cross-reactivity of these materials is discussed.

In Brief Hydration, the absorption of uid into the interstitial areas of a glove once it is wetted, adversely aaects the clinical performance of natural rubber latex gloves. These eeects potentially include increased conductivity, c hanges in tensile and tactile properties, and increased chemical and viral permeability. All of our data indicate that signiicant h ydration is an undesirable prope...
