Disseminated nocardiosis (DN), is an infrequent and severe infection due to Nocardia species and defined as infection in two or more discontinuous organs. Most infections occur in the immunocompromised host or in persons with underlying disease. DN occurs rarely in children. In this report, we describe an 11-year-old immune-compromised child with nocardiosis involving the lung, skin, brain a...
Studies in vitro of the sensitivity to trimethoprim and sulphonamides of nine strains of N. asteroides, two strains of N. caviae, and one of N. blackwellii are presented. No unequivocal evidence of synergism was found. Despite this, the inclusion of trimethoprim in the drug regime when sulphonamides are used in the treatment of nocardiosis is suggested on empirical grounds.
A 24-year-old man who was initially thought to have nocardiosis of his mediastinal lymph node which progressed to involve his right lung, had to undergo a right pneumonectomy when he failed to respond to treatment with sulphadiazine. Histology of the right lung specimen and a subsequent axillary lymph node biopsy revealed that he actually had lymphocyte-depleted Hodgkin's disease.
Nocardia has emerged as an important opportunistic pathogen, especially in organ transplant recipients. Heart transplant (HT) recipients initially had an especially high rate of Nocardia infection, but this could be reduced by the routine use of cyclosporine. Our objective was to clarify the prevalence and presentation of Nocardiosis in HT recipients in a retrospective cross-sectional analysis.
Nocardia species are found in soil rich in organic matter and in healthy gingiva, as well as periodontal pockets as oral microflora. Some species are pathogenic with low virulence, hence cause opportunistic infection most frequently in immunocompromised hosts, though occasionally in immunocompetent individuals. Pleuropulmonary nocardiosis is a rare occurrence. We report such a case in a 72yrs o...
Cavitary pneumonia in immunocompromised patients is a challenging entity. Establishing accurate diagnosis and starting effective antibiotics are essential steps towards improving outcome. A 58-year-old stem cell transplant patient was admitted to the hospital with necrotizing pneumonia caused by nocardia. The disease progressed despite of aggrieve antimicrobial therapy. Nocardiosis continues to...
Nocardiosis in a Patient with Acute Necrotizing Pancreatitis. Can A Simple Microscope Specimen Save a Patient’s Life? A Case Report Krzysztof Madej1*, Hanna Tomczak2 and Marek Karczewski1 1Department of Transplantology, General and Vascular Surgery, Clinical Hospital of Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland 2Central Laboratory of Microbiology, Clinical Hospital of Poznan University of M...
The pathogenic strain Nocardia cyriacigeorgica GUH-2 was isolated from a fatal human nocardiosis case, and its genome was sequenced. The complete genomic sequence of this strain contains 6,194,645 bp, an average G+C content of 68.37%, and no plasmids. We also identified several protein-coding genes to which N. cyriacigeorgica's virulence can potentially be attributed.
A case of cutaneous nocardiosis in a dog has been described. Clinical diagnosis was made on basis of cytological and histopathological examinations and bacteriological analysis. The dog was treated with cephalexin and successfully cured in 8 weeks. There have been no reports of such cases in Poland so far.
A case of disseminated nocardiosis caused by Nocardia arthritidis in an immunocompromised patient with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and rheumatoid arthritis is presented. This report highlights the use for multilocus sequence typing (MLST) in addition to single gene molecular sequencing to identify rare Nocardia species.
