A novel design of a microbial fuel cell is realized by constructing bio-cocatalyst beads immobilized with riboflavin-secreting Escherichia coli and decoupling them from an anodic biocatalyst. A microbial fuel cell loaded with these bio-cocatalyst beads shows significantly enhanced performance without occupying an active electrode surface area.

Early generation ceramic articulations were problematic in terms of ceramic implant fracture and wear. Although the mechanical properties of ceramic material have improved during the last three decades, ceramic component fracture remains an issue. Many authors have reported fractures of the ceramic head, and a few have described ceramic acetabular insert fracture. However, these complications a...

The identity and history of the indigenous groups who occupied the Lesser Antilles during the ceramic periods remain highly controversial. Although recent archaeological evidence has challenged hypotheses concerning the organization of human groups in this region, more biological data are needed to fully inform the discussion. Our study provides, to our knowledge, the first palaeogenetic data f...

Engineering ceramics have high stiffness, excellent thermostability, and relatively low density, but their brittleness impedes their use as structural materials. Incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a brittle ceramic might be expected to provide CNT/ceramic composites with both high toughness and high temperature stability. Until now, however, materials fabrication difficulties have limit...

Interest in nanocrystaJline ceramic powders is due to their attractive processing and mechanical properties. The disadvantages of conventional ceramics, such as large internal flaws, negligible ductility, hightemperature processing, can possibly be eliminated or minimized by starting with finegrained powders. A previous study on the sinterability of nanocrystalline ceramic powders showed that h...

BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel metal-free ceramic total knee replacement system. METHODS Thirty-eight primary total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) were performed on 34 patients using the metal-free BPK-S ceramic total knee replacement system with both the femoral and tibial components of an alumina/zirconia ceramic composite. The clinical outcom...

This aim of this research was to develop a novel ceramic scaffold to evaluate the response of bone after ceramic implantation in New Zealand (NZ) rabbits. Ceramics were prepared by the polymer replication method and inserted into NZ rabbits. Macroporous scaffolds with interconnected round-shaped pores (0.5-1.5 mm = were prepared). The scaffold acted as a physical support where cells with osteob...

Geometrical structuring of monolithic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) components is required for their practical implementation in many areas, including electronic devices, gas storage/separation, catalysis, energy storage as well bio-medical applications. Despite progress MOFs, an approach the precise patterning MOF functional geometries millimeter- to micro-meter depth lacking. Here, a facile...
