In mammals, some axons from each retina cross at the optic chiasm, whereas others do not. Although several loci have been identified within the chiasmatic region that appear to provide guidance cues to the retinal axons, the underlying molecular mechanisms that regulate this process are poorly understood. Here we investigate whether the earliest retinal axon trajectories and a cellular populati...
We describe a case of ganglioglioma of the optic chiasm and tract in a 33-year-old man. Review of the literature discloses only seven cases of tumors of the anterior visual pathway that meet the histological criteria for such neoplasms. A detailed histological description of our case and a review of the literature is provided.
We present a case of a 21 year old male patient diagnosed with a 2.2 cm prolactin-secreting adenoma in contact with the optic chiasm. The patient was treated with up to 6mg/week of cabergoline (total cumulative dose 814 mg) and developed mild valvulopathy. Valvulopathy was subsequently reversed after discontinuation of cabergoline therapy.
A patient is described who presented with visual loss due to infiltration of the optic chiasm by chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. This case demonstrates intracranial infiltration as a primary presentation of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia without lymphoreticular involvement and, to our knowledge, is the first report of a chiasmal syndrome due to this lymphoproliferative disorder.
The discovery of canine achiasma and hemichiasma has been followed by the identification of human achiasma (four individuals, to date). See-saw nystagmus was present in all cases of achiasma (canine and human) and in one of two cases of canine hemichiasma studied. Human infants with see-saw nystagmus should be imaged for possible structural abnormalities of the optic chiasm.
We describe the MR image findings in a case of granulomatous hypophysitis due to Wegner's granulomatosis. A high index suspicion of hypophysitis based on imaging findings allowed successful medical management and helped avoid surgery. The MR imaging features included a thickened stalk, a diffusely and uniformly enlarged gland, a normal size or minimally enlarged sella, and enhancement of the op...
Pituicytomas are rare neoplasms of the sellar region. We report a case of vision loss and a junctional scotoma in a 43-year-old woman caused by compression of the optic chiasm by a pituitary tumor. The morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the tumor were consistent with the diagnosis of pituicytoma. The tumor was debulked surgically, and the patient's vision improved.
Multiple brain lesions are usually due to metastatic spread. The authors describe an unusual case of a 56-year-old male presenting with visual loss secondary to multiple intracranial lesions, with infiltration of the optic chiasm and an incidental renal lesion. Open biopsy of the brain lesion confirmed glioblastoma multiforme.
