Optimistic concurrency control relies on end-of-transaction validation rather than lock acquisition prior to data accesses. Optimistic concurrency control is popular and various systems employ it based on a conviction that it increases concurrency, performance, and scalability. In contrast, we have concluded that optimistic concurrency control permits more concurrency than pessimistic concurren...

In recent years, existing computing schemes and paradigms have evolved towards more flexible, ad-hoc scalable frameworks. Nowadays, exchanging interactions between entities often takes place in nonstructured environments where the number and nature of the different participants are unknown variables. In this context, traditional fair exchange protocols cease to be a feasible solution to the exc...

We study the behaviour of rational agents in exchange protocols which rely on trustees. We allow malicious parties to compromise the trustee by paying a cost and, thereby, present a game analysis that advocates exchange protocols which induce balanced risks on the participants. We also present a risk-balanced protocol for fair confidential secret comparison.

We propose a tightening sequence of optimistic approximations to the Gittins index in “Optimistic Indices.” show that use these concert with an increasing discount factor appears offer compelling alternative state-of-the-art schemes proposed for Bayesian multiarmed bandit problem. prove indices constitutes regret optimal algorithm. Perhaps more interestingly, even loosest substantial performanc...

We take an approach to the Λ nonmesonic weak decay in nuclei based on the exchange of mesons under the guidelines of chiral Lagrangians. The one pion and one kaon exchange are considered, together with the exchange of two pions, either correlated, leading to an important scalar-isoscalar exchange (σ-like exchange), or uncorrelated (box diagrams). A drastic reduction of the OPE results for the Γ...

The one pion and one kaon exchange are considered, together with the exchange of two pions, either correlated, leading to an important scalar-isoscalar exchange (σ-like exchange), or uncorrelated (box diagrams). Constraints of chiral dynamics are used to generate these exchanges. A drastic reduction o...

A persistent issue surfacing throughout the Conference was whether or not economic research had supplied any useful guide to the factors determining the exchange rate. Paul Krugman was very pessimistic on this score, whereas BlundellWignall, Fahrer and Heath (BWFH) were optimistic. From the nature of the discussion it was clear that such a relationship is desirable, as it can serve both as an a...

The recent ruling by the FCC has mandated a geo-location database approach to regulate the coexistence of primary and secondary users in TV white space. However, mechanisms for secondary coexistence have been left unspecified and prompts the design and study of the same. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to incentivize fair and efficient secondary user cooperation. Specifically, we assume t...
