Despite improvements to standard treatments (atropine, oxime) and intensive care management, the mortality associated with organophosphate (OP) poisoning has not substantially decreased. In this study, we evaluated the role of packed red blood cells (RBCs) transfusion in acute OP poisoning. Patients diagnosed with OP poisoning were included in this prospective study, and then were transfused wi...

We are reporting a case of poisoning with a non-organophosphate pesticide (indoxacarb) resulting in methemoglobinemia and seizures, and successfully treated with ventilator care and intravenous ascorbic acid. Since there are limited data concerning the human toxicity of indoxacarb, physicians in emergency rooms should be aware of this rare poison and also its clinical presentations.

OBJECTIVES Neuropsychiatric disorders and increased suicide rates have been associated with exposure to cholinesterase inhibiting organophosphates. This study examined symptoms of psychological distress, including suicidal ideation, among banana workers in Costa Rica previously exposed to a cholinesterase inhibiting pesticide. METHODS 78 workers who had received medical attention 1-3 years pr...

Amitraz is commonly used in agricultural industries throughout the world as a farm-animal insecticide. Despite its widespread use, amitraz intoxication is extremely rare and mainly occurs through accidental ingestion by young children. Severe, life-threatening amitraz intoxication in adults is very rarely recognized and reported. Described herein is a previously healthy 54-year-old patient who ...

Inappropriate use of toxic chemicals is common in developing countries, where it leads to excessive exposure and high risks of unintentional poisoning. Risks are particularly high with the pesticides used in agriculture, poor rural populations live and work in close proximity to these compounds and often store these compounds in and around their homes. It is estimated that most of the death fro...

Organophosphate (OP) compounds are extremely toxic chemicals that may be absorbed via skin, conjunctiva, gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. Treatment of OP poisoning is a critical and aggressive process which includes decontamination, antidote administration (atropin and oximes), mechanical ventilation support and extracorporeal elimination procedures if needed. Here we present a young f...

Data concerning clinical cases of pesticide poisoning from 1998 to 2002 from the hospitals affiliated with the Japanese Association of Rural Medicine were analyzed. 346 cases of poisoning by agricultural chemicals were reported from 65 hospitals. Suicides accounted for 70% of pesticide poisoning cases, followed by accidental exposures during spraying work (16%) and accidental ingestion (8%). Th...

INTRODUCTION Organophosphate (OP) insecticides inhibit both cholinesterase and pseudo-cholinesterase activities. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase causes accumulation of acetylcholine at synapses, and overstimulation of neurotransmission occurs as a result of this accumulation. The mortality rate of OP poisoning is high. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment is often life saving. Treat...

Electrophysiological studies in suicidal patients with organophosphate poisoning are reported. Patients often developed muscular weakness of variable severity owing to diplorisation block at nicotinic receptors. During such paralysis nerve conduction velocity and distal latencies were normal even in severely paralysed patients. The amplitude of the compound action potential was smaller than in ...
