A 66-year-old woman reported fullness in the right ear for 6 months before admission. A submucosal mass shown by MR imaging and CT to arise in the prestyloid parapharyngeal space was the cause of her symptoms. Histologically, the mass proved to be a rhabdomyoma, a rare benign neoplasm, that arose from the muscular wall of the pharynx.

Cross-sectional imaging is an indispensable tool in the investigation of parapharyngeal space and infratemporal fossa pathologies. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging exquisitely display the complex anatomy of this region and provides accurate spatial localization of pathology, differential diagnosis and vital information for treatment planning.

A newborn had an extracerebral, intracranial mass extending from the right middle cranial fossa through the base of the skull to the parapharyngeal space. The mass was predominantly composed of immature brain tissue. It was enclosed by its own leptomeninges and dura and was classified as a glioneural hamartoma.
