Empirical models can be constructed relating the change in toxicity to the change in chemical structure for series of similar compounds or mixtures. The first step is to translate the variation in structure to quantitative numbers. This gives a data table, a data matrix denoted by X, which then is analyzed. The same type of the models can be used to relate the variation of in vivo data to the v...

2 The Asia/Pacific Research Center (A/PARC) is an important Stanford venue, where faculty and students, visiting scholars, and distinguished business and government leaders meet and exchange views on contemporary Asia and U.S. involvement in the region. A/PARC research results in seminars and conferences, published studies, occasional and discussion papers, special reports, and books. A/PARC ma...

Background Little is known about the evolutionary process and emergence time of resistance mutations to fluoroquinolone in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. Methods We analyzed S. Typhi isolates collected from returned travelers between 2001 and 2016. Based on ciprofloxacin susceptibility, isolates were categorized as highly resistant (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] ≥ 4 μg/mL [CIPHR]...

Fluoroquinolones remain the most commonly used antimicrobials for the prevention and management of bacterial endophthalmitis. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are the most frequently recovered pathogens. Increasing resistance among this group has paralleled the presence of methicillin resistance. From 2005 to 2010, we recovered 38 methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus epidermidis (MSSE) isolat...

Alterations in the target proteins of fluoroquinolones, especially in GyrA and ParC, are known to cause resistance. Here, we investigated environmental Escherichia communities to explore the possible link between the abundance of mutations, and the exposure to fluoroquinolones. Sediment samples were collected from a relatively pristine lake, up and downstream from a sewage treatment plant, and ...

Twenty P. aeruginosa isolates were collected from six cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, aged 27 to 33, in 1994 (9 isolates) and 1997 (11 isolates) at the CF Center, Copenhagen, Denmark, and were typed by pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) or ribotyping. Five of the patients had isolates with the same PFGE or ribotyping patterns in 1997 as in 1994, and ciprofloxacin had a two- to fourfold highe...

We have isolated in vitro fluoroquinolone-resistant mutants of the Lyme disease agent, Borrelia burgdorferi. Mutations in parC, which encodes a subunit of topoisomerase IV, were associated with loss of susceptibility to sparfloxacin, moxifloxacin, and Bay-Y3118, but not ciprofloxacin. This is the first description of fluoroquinolone resistance in the spirochete phylum.

The linac power upgrade program is now in progress, after a successful recovery from the earthquake disaster. The power upgrade includes an ion source, a RFQ, and a 400 MeV annular-ring coupled structure (ACS) linac. We started a full-scale development of a cesium-seeded RFdriven negative hydrogen ion source. The ion source extracted a beam current of more than 60 mA with a duty factor of 2.5 %...

OBJECTIVES To investigate the impact of low levels of fluoroquinolone resistance on the emergence of resistant mutants, we examined the mutant selection window (MSW) hypothesis in experimental pneumonia in rabbits infected with pneumococci with various susceptibility levels to fluoroquinolones and treated with gatifloxacin using a human-like regimen (equivalent to 400 mg once daily). The MSW co...

Sixty extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli isolated from rivers and lakes in Switzerland were screened for individual strains additionally exhibiting a reduced quinolone susceptibility phenotype. Totally, 42 such isolates were found and further characterized for their molecular (fluoro)quinolone resistance mechanisms. PCR and sequence analysis were performed to identi...
