A change in subtask order in the psychological refractory period (PRP) paradigm increases the effect of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) on the second response. We used a paradigm with cued, randomly determined subtask order to test the hypothesis that this SOA by order switch overadditivity reflects order control, via "copying" stimulus order. In Experiments 1a and 1b, overadditivity was eviden...

Levels of progesterone were determined by competitive protein-binding techniques and oestrogens by radio-ligand binding techniques in the uterine and peripheral plasma of parturient ewes. Uterine progesterone levels began a continuous decline 4 to 5 days ante partum whereas jugular levels only declined 1 or 2 days ante partum. Peripheral plasma progesterone levels were significantly elevated in

Airway management of the parturient has serious implications for the anesthetist. Meticulous patient evaluation and preparation is essential. A management plan that can be implemented in the event of failed intubation should be familiar to all anesthetists who are involved in obstetrical anesthesia.

The case presented is that of a parturient with tetra-amelia, the congenital absence or near absence of all limbs. The difficulties encountered with monitoring and venous access due to absence of extremities illustrate the necessity for a detailed management plan with emphasis on early intervention. The reasons for the high incidence of operative delivery are outlined.

We describe the successful resuscitation of a parturient who developed cardiovascular collapse immediately after cesarean delivery most likely due to amniotic fluid embolism, based on the clinical presentation and later confirmed by exclusion. Aggressive therapy was instituted right away including early administration of vasopressin. Care continued in a critical care setting and she recovered c...

Introduction & Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the evaluation of intrathecal sufentanil for labor analgesia with respect to duration of labor stages and relief of pain during labor. Materials & Methods: In a clinical trial 60 subjects with ASA class I were selected and randomly divided in two equal groups. 30 subjects had received sufentanil 10 mgr in 1 ml of saline...

This study provides an original method of analysing maternal mortality in Brazzaville, based on all deaths collected in the mortuaries in August 1996. During the study period, a clinical examination of all cadavers brought to Brazzaville’s three mortuaries was done, and the relatives who had delivered the bodies were interviewed on signs and symptoms preceeding and the actual circumstances surr...

Although dual-task interference is ubiquitous in a variety of task domains, stop-signal studies suggest that response inhibition is not subject to such interference. Nevertheless, no study has directly examined stop-signal performance in a dual-task setting. In two experiments, stop-signal performance was examined in a psychological refractory period task, in which subjects inhibited one respon...

The standard bottleneck model of the psychological refractory period (PRP) assumes that the selection of the second response is postponed until the first response has been selected. Accordingly, dual-task interference is attributed to a single central-processing bottleneck involving decision and response selection, but not the execution of the response itself. In order to critically examine the...

We generalize the classical Cayley-Dickson doubling process starting with a quaternion algebra over a field F by allowing the scalar in the doubling to be an invertible element in the algebra. We investigate the resulting eight-dimensional algebras over F and show that they are division algebras for all scalars chosen in D outside of the base field F , if D is a division algebra.
