We have studied the relative stabilities of Bingel-Hirsch non-IPR endohedral metallofullerene monoadducts having one, two, or three adjacent pentagon pairs. The most stable addition always leads to an open adduct and never occurs on [5,5] bonds. Our results show that the thermodynamics of the addition is governed by the additive local aromaticity of the rings of the final adducts.

Employing a rigorous theoretical method for the construction of exact many-electron ground states we prove that interactions can be employed to tune a bare dispersive band structure such that it develops a flat band. Thereby, we show that pentagon-chain polymers with electron densities above half filling may be designed to become ferromagnetic or half metallic.

A vector valued interpolation scheme for a pentagon is described which is compatible with surface patches which have a rectangular domain of definition. Such a scheme could be useful in computeraided geometric design problems, where a pentagonal patch occurs within a rectangular patch framework.

Density-functional theory calculations are presented for low-energy La@C₇₂, La@C₇₄ and La@C₇₆ isomers with IPR (isolated pentagon rule) and non-IPR cages. The relative isomeric production yields at high temperatures are evaluated using the calculated terms, and the relationships to observations are discussed.
