SUMMARY The use of in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is rapidly emerging as an important clinical tool to evaluate changes in corneal sensory nerves as a surrogate measure for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Commonly used metrics to document and grade the severity of diabetes and risk for diabetic peripheral neuropathy include nerve fiber length, density, branching and tortuosity. In addition ...

The retinal fiber layer and the juxtaretinal portion of the optic nerve of goldfish have been studied with light and electron microscopy in order to determine whether the age-related order of fibers in the nerve originates in the retina. In the retina, no patent spaces (channels) were noted. The fibers ran in fascicles and consisted of two classes: nonmyelinated fibers, which ran superficially ...

Exposure to loud sounds damages the auditory periphery and induces maladaptive changes in central parts of the auditory system. Diminished peripheral afferentation and altered inhibition influence the processing of sounds in the auditory cortex. It is unclear, however, which types of inhibitory interneurons are affected by acoustic trauma. Here we used single-unit electrophysiological recording...

BACKGROUND The parapapillary gamma zone has recently been defined as the parapapillary region free of Bruch's membrane. Although it has been reported the presence of defects in peripapillary gamma zone, hitherto undescribed is the herniation of the retinal nerve fiver layer tissue into the peripapillary gamma zone defect with the resulting localized defects in the retinal nerve fiber layer. C...

Statement of Problem: Giant cell granuloma (G.C.G) is a reactive lesion which affects the jaws and oral mucosa of gingiva. This lesion is classified to central and peripheral ones. The histopathologic aspects of central and peripheral G.C.G is the same. The central lesions are aggressive and cause osseous destruction. The peripheral G.C.G produces ulcerative swellings similar to pyogenic granulo...

these investigations indicate that the anterior layer of the renal fascia continues across the midline of the body in front of the aorta and inferior vena cava to become continuous with a similar layer on the opposite side of the body. the posterior layer of the renal fascia blends with the fascia covering the psoas major especially at the medial and lateral edges of this muscle. but, in additi...

The science of immunotoxicology began in the early 1970s, following the recognition of increased sensitivity to infection following exposure of test species, including monkeys, hamsters, ducks, rats, mice and guinea pigs to various xenobiotics. Reduced resistance to infectious disease was a well-documented consequence of primary and acquired immunodeficiencies, but a novel outcome of xenobiotic...

Modularity is the main characteristic of the biological systems and especially of the brain 2]. For example , Vision can be described as the interactions of diierent processing systems 1]. Physiologists relate two pathways from the retina. The rst conveys information from the retina to the cortical areas, where specialized areas analyse the visual data (e.g., colour vision, motion detection, ob...

The eccentricity of a vertex $v$ is the maximum distance between $v$ and anyother vertex. A vertex with maximum eccentricity is called a peripheral vertex. The peripheral Wiener index $ PW(G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined as the sum ofthe distances between all pairs of peripheral vertices of $G.$ In this paper, weinitiate the study of the peripheral Wiener index and we investigate its basicproperti...

A study of the effects of hypertonic solutions on the structure of peripheral nerve myelin reveals an expansion rather than a contraction of the layer spacing. This suggests the absence of "free" water between the myelin layers. Hypotonic solutions bring about a change in radial repeat period from 171 A to 250 to 270 A. These findings are of significance in relation to the structure of myelin.
