THE CANADIAN JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 695 In the hierarchy of waste management techniques it is better to prevent harmful emissions from being generated in the first place. If this laudable objective is not practically feasible, the treatment of emissions to produce less harmful substances is worthy of detailed consideration. For such waste treatment processes, the most technically and e...

A dynamic Euler-Euler model for gas-liquid flows subject to mass transfer and simultaneous chemical reaction is assembled. The bubble size distribution is computed from an equation governing the evolution of average bubble mass. Highperformance finite element tools for numerical solution of the problem at hand are discussed. Computational results for the chemisorption of CO2 into NaOH shed some...

Mixing and dispersion of solids and gases in liquids in mechanically agitated reactors is involved in about 80% of the operations in the chemical industries, including processes ranging from leaching and complete dissolution of reagents to suspension of catalysts and reaction products, such as precipitates and crystals (Smith, 1990). This is one of the most widely used unit operations because o...

We explore the effects that different reactor types have on Spiky-RBN AChem systems, looking at mass conserving and flow reactors. To assist in analysing the behaviour we introduce an activity measure based on possible system state changes as a result of changes in particle properties. This leads to a discussion on approaches to engineering complex systems towards specific goals.

Development und experimental testing of a new kind of dielectric barrier discharge flow reactors applicable for plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition as well as surface treatment processes at atmospheric pressure are described. Using a combination of two upstream modules, a gradient mixer and a homogenizer, the reactor is fed by a laminar gas flow with an established concentration gradient ...

Forces oscillations introduced in the input flow rate of non flat continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR with 3 independent species) are shown to result in an averaged flat system with linearizing output independent of the special form of the kinetics laws.

Previous studies have confirmed significant removal of various trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) by whiterot fungal cultures under sterile batch test conditions. However, little is known about TrOC removal in continuous flow fungal reactors in a non-sterile environment. This study reports the removal of two TrOCs, namely, bisphenol A and diclofenac, by a fungal membrane bioreactor (MBR).

Several hydrogenation reactions involving O-debenzylations, aromatic nitro group reductions and reductive dethionations were investigated under continuous flow conditions in a novel, laboratory scale hydrogenation device that combines endogeneous hydrogen generation and heterogeneous Pd/C or Raney-Ni catalyst cartridges. The hydrogenation of organic compounds through addition and/or hydrogenoly...

We present a study in which the versatility of 3D-printing is combined with the processing advantages of flow chemistry for the synthesis of organic compounds. Robust and inexpensive 3D-printed reactionware devices are easily connected using standard fittings resulting in complex, custom-made flow systems, including multiple reactors in a series with in-line, real-time analysis using an ATR-IR ...

First and Second Generation Immigrant Educational Attainment and Labor Market Outcomes: A Comparison of the United States and Canada The educational and labor market outcomes of the first, first-and-a-half, second and third generations of immigrants to the United States and Canada are compared. These countries’ immigration flows have large differences in source countries, scale and timing, and ...
