The hierarchical porous structures of vinyl polymers, such as polystyrene (PSt) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), were derived from morphologies of a biomineral through replication. The resultant PSt hierarchical structures showed enhanced adsorption properties of organic molecules as hydrophobic adsorbents in an aqueous medium.

We present the design and fabrication of a phenanthrenequinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) photopolymer material. Large blocks of samples were made, and the material showed negligible shrinkage after optical exposures. We recorded and reconstructed 250 holograms at a single spot, using a 1-cm(3) block.

A photochromic diarylethene was found to crystallize rapidly from the amorphous state in poly(methyl methacrylate) by heating at 130 degrees C. The diarylethene amorphous film was successfully patterned to form microcrystals upon ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation through a photomask, showing a high resolution as good as approximately 4 microm under optimal conditions.
