Diabetic encephalopathy may lead to cognitive deficits in diabetic patients and diminish quality of life. It has been shown that protracted hyperglycaemia is directly associated with neuronal apoptosis, which is involved in diabetic encephalopathy. The anaphase-promoting complex (APC) is essential for the survival of post-mitotic neurons. In our previous study, we found that the mitotic arrest ...

It is now established that the dysmature infant, of low birthweight for the period of gestation, may develop a diabetic state in the neonatal period (Arey, 1953; Engleson and Zetterqvist, 1957; Hutchison, Keay, and Kerr, 1962). This condition, which is temporary and has a good prognosis, has to be distinguished from other causes of hyperglycaemia. Permanent diabetes mellitus occurs rarely in th...

Aim: Diabetes Mellitus requires adequate glycemic control along with prevention of associated morbidities, disability limitation, and rehabilitation. The present study was aimed to determine the impact of socio-demographic and lifestyle factors on the glycemic status. Settings and Design: A cross sectional study was conducted at Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) Polyclinic, Sultan...

We read with great interest the article by Uyttenboogaart and co-workers on the association of serum glucose level with outcome in acute ischaemic stroke. In their multivariate analysis hyperglycaemia (glucose 48mmol/l) was associated with worse functional outcome in a concentration-dependent manner in non-lacunar stroke, whereas in lacunar stroke hyperglycaemia was associated with favourable o...

OBJECTIVE Endothelial dysfunction is frequently present in individuals with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes and can be induced by high-fat or high-carbohydrate meals. Because exenatide reduces postprandial glucose and lipid excursions, we hypothesized that it may also improve postprandial endothelial function. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS In a double-blinded randomized crossover design, ...

diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine diseases and its type ii is the major form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases worldwide. the inhibition of carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes such as ?-amylase can be an important strategy in the control of blood glucose levels in patients with type ii diabetes. in this investigation, three morus species, m. alba, m. alba var. nigra and ...

There are two lines of evidence that drove the evolution of these guidelines: (1) The weight of arguments that suggest an association between high glucose levels and detrimental outcome has substantially increased in the last few years. Observational studies, both naturalistic [8, 9] and trialassociated [10–12] , have reported higher morbidity and mortality in patients with initial hyperglycaem...

Sudden changes in refraction are well recognised feature of hyperglycaemia. A tendency towards myopia has always been associated with elevations in blood glucose. Twelve diabetic patients were found to have experienced such refractive changes. Review of their records demonstrates that hyperglycaemia produces hyperopia. A theoretical mechanism for this phenomenon is discussed.

three patients developed hyperglycaemia during tamsulosin use. all patients had diabetes and recovered after withdrawal. a pharmacological mechanism for this adverse drug reaction is suggested: stimulation of the α1-receptor is one of the insulin-independent pathways for glucose uptake, hence inhibition might increase plasma glucose concentrations. Physicians should be aware of hyperglycaemia a...

BACKGROUND Non-diabetic patients presenting with an acute stroke often have hyperglycaemia. In most populations it is unknown whether the hyperglycaemia is transient and due to the acute stress response or whether it represents undiagnosed abnormal glucose metabolism. AIM To evaluate the prevalence and predictors of persistent hyperglycaemia in non-diabetic patients with an acute stroke. DE...
