Recently, convincing evidence was found for extremely large X-ray absorption by column densities > 1023 cm−2 in broad absorption line quasars. One consequence of this is that any soft X-ray emission from these QSOs would be the scattered light or leaked light from partially covering absorbing material. A detection of the unabsorbed soft X-ray and absorbed hard X-ray component will allow to dete...

We demonstrate four- and two-terminal perovskite-perovskite tandem solar cells with ideally matched band gaps. We develop an infrared-absorbing 1.2-electron volt band-gap perovskite, FA0.75Cs0.25Sn0.5Pb0.5I3, that can deliver 14.8% efficiency. By combining this material with a wider-band gap FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.5Br0.5)3 material, we achieve monolithic two-terminal tandem efficiencies of 17.0% wit...

Currently the use of new materials is becoming more prevalent in vehicle industry for the lightweight design purpose. The design of engine hood is very important for pedestrian safety during a vehicle-pedestrian accident. In order to improve the pedestrian protection performance of the new material engine hood, the radial stiffening rib structure and trapezium sandwich structure engine hoods we...

The value of absorption of light energy is dependent on the number of molecules present in absorbing material and the thickness of the medium. Thus, intensity of light energy leaving the absorbing substance is used as an indication of concentration of that particular substance. If the thickness i.e. path length of the light energy in the sample holder, normally the flow through cell and intensi...

New procedure for permittivity and permeability extraction of two composite (dielectric matrix + magnetic inclusions), isotropic and homogeneous absorbing material is presented. It calculates mentioned parameters by fitting measured transmission data with Debye relaxation model (for complex dielectric permittivity extraction) and with Lorenzian resonant model (for complex permeability extractio...

We demonstrate the near-field coupling and energy transfer between photoexcited dye molecules and guided modes in layers of strongly absorbing dielectrics. The dye molecules decay by exciting long-range guided modes (LRGMs) in a thin layer of chalcogenide glass. These modes can exist in spite of the very large absorption of the material forming the layer. The LRGMs are detected by coupling then...

A detailed analysis and design of thin planar absorbing structure using Jerusalem cross slot (JCS) is presented in this paper. Based on uniplanar compact high-impedance surface characteristics, the resistance loss material layer can be directly attached to the surface of JCS structure, thus absorbing electromagnetic waves effectively. The improved design is characterized by its wider bandwidth ...

Spectrally selective light detection is vital for full-colour and near-infrared (NIR) imaging and machine vision. This is not possible with traditional broadband-absorbing inorganic semiconductors without input filtering, and is yet to be achieved for narrowband absorbing organic semiconductors. We demonstrate the first sub-100 nm full-width-at-half-maximum visible-blind red and NIR photodetect...
