The acid-base reactions between the rare-earth metal (Ln) tris(ortho-N,N-dimethylaminobenzyl) complexes [Ln(CH2C(H4NMe2-o)3] with one equivalent of the silylene-linked cyclopentadiene-amine ligand (C5Me4H)SiMe2NH(C6H2Me3-2,4,6) afforded the corresponding half-sandwich aminobenzyl complexes [{Me2Si(C5Me4)(NC6H2Me3-2,4,6)}Ln(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)(thf)] (2-Ln) (Ln=Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Lu) in 60-87 % is...
The ability of biochar to immobilize metals relies on the amount of functional groups at its surface but the contribution of each functional groups (e.g. carboxylic, phenolic) to metal bonding is poorly known. Using a new approach based on previous works on rare earth element (REE) interactions with humic substances, we aim at elucidating the relative contribution of these binding sites to meta...
Spin reorientation and magnetization reversal are two important features of the rare-earth orthorhombic perovskites ($RM{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$) that have attracted a lot attention, though their exact microscopic origin has eluded researchers. Here, using density functional theory classical atomistic spin dynamics we build general Heisenberg magnetic model allows to explore whole phase diagram chromi...
Deposition and micro-structuring of Al2O3:Er layers with low background losses (0.11 dB/cm) and lifetimes up to 7 ms have been optimized for active devices. Net gain of 0.7 dB/cm at 1533 nm has been measured. ©2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (140.4480) Optical amplifiers; (140.5680) Rare earth and transition metal solid-state lasers
The reaction of Ln(AlMe(4))(3) with bulky hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp(t)(Bu,Me))H proceeds via a sequence of methane elimination and C-H bond activation, affording unprecedented rare-earth metal ligand moieties including Ln(Me)[(micro-Me)AlMe(3)] and X-ray structurally characterized "Tebbe-like" Ln[(micro-CH(2))(2)AlMe(2)].
A novel single frequency fiber laser with more than 100 mW output is presented. Low noise and a coherence length of >75 km make this laser extremely useful in sensing, LIDAR, and coherent communication applications. @2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.2320) Fiber optics amplifiers and oscillators; (140.3570) Lao;ers. single-mode; (140.5680) Rare earth and transition metal solid-st...
Magnetic foreign body ingestion can have a very serious sequale if multiple or combined with another metal object inside the abdomen. We report 2 cases of ingestion of rare-earth magnets with a very different consequences. This adds to the world's literature on this topic.
Bulk and epitaxial composites of Yb:KLu(WO4)2 were grown and characterized. CW-lasing @1μm was demonstrated achieving conversion efficiencies of 50% and output powers of 1W for the bulk and 25.5% and 0.5W for the composite Yb:KLu(WO4)2. ©2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (140.5680) Rare earth and transition metal solid-state lasers; (140.3380) Laser materials
C-dots (3-5 nm in diameter) obtained by most simple heating of polyols (glycerol, diethylene glycol and PEG 400) show intense blue and green emission (50% quantum yield). Upon modification with TbCl3/EuCl3, energy transfer from the C-dots to the rare-earth metal results in line-type Tb(3+) (green)/Eu(3+) (red) emission with quantum yields up to 85%.
