We studied a metasurface constituted as a periodic array of semiconductor split-ring resonators. The resonance frequencies of the metasurface excited by normally incident light were found to be continuously tunable in the terahertz regime through an external magnetostatic field of suitable orientation. As such metasurfaces can be assembled into 3D metamaterials, the foregoing conclusion also ap...

A compact design based on high-Q microdisk resonators is proposed for low-power modulation where anti-symmetric operation of two phase shifters leads to significant insertion loss reduction. Operation analysis and design procedure are presented. OCIS codes: (130.3120) Integrated optics devices; (230.5750) Resonators; (130.4110) Modulators.

Abstract: Modulator designs are proposed that can employ arbitrarily high-Q resonators to simultaneously achieve high energy efficiency and distortionless modulation at all (low/high) frequencies by completely decoupling optical cavity dynamics from the modulation frequency response. ©2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (130.4110) Modulators; (130.3120) Integrated optics devices; (230.5...

A direct transmission line model of noise in 1D electromagnetic media is presented, and used to find the emittance and noise factor of a negative index metamaterial based on resonators and rods. The results highlight the poor noise performance of negative index materials based on low-Q magnetic resonators.

This paper is aimed at demonstrating the high capabilities of KTa0.5Nb0.5O3 thin films for microwave agility applications. Tunable capacitors, resonators and phase shifters were realized with KTN materials. Their high frequency measurements showed, in particular, the very high tuning factors of these films under quite low electric field. Index Terms Ferroelectrics, Interdigital Capacitors, Phas...

Silicon microdisks are optical resonators that can exhibit surprising nonlinear behavior. We present a new analysis of the dynamics of these resonators elucidating the mathematical origin of spontaneous oscillations and deriving predictions for observed phenomena such as a frequency comb spectrum with MHz-scale repetition rate. We test predictions through laboratory experiment and numerical sim...

Over the past few years, microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based on-chip resonators have shown significant potential for sensing and high frequency signal processing applications. This is due to their excellent features like small size, large frequency-quality factor product, low power consumption, low cost batch fabrication, and integrability with CMOS IC technology. Radio frequency communi...

Stark shift on a superconducting qubit in circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) has been used to construct universal quantum entangling gates on superconducting resonators in previous works. It is a second-order coupling effect between the resonator and the qubit in the dispersive regime, which leads to a slow state-selective rotation on the qubit. Here, we present two proposals to construct th...
