During a 2-year period, 31 cases of a hereditary retinal degeneration in dogs bred in India were found mainly suspected for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) with typical history of initial nyctalopia followed by hemeralopia. Out of 31 PRA suspected dogs, 8 dogs (26%) were from the age group of 1-5 years, 15 (48%) 6-10 years and the rest (26%) 11-15 years. The most predominant breed was Spitz (...

Since the first successful report by Gonin, retinal detachment (RD) surgery has come a long way and over the last 70–80 years, the anatomical success rate has increased to over 90%. The evolution of RD surgery is both exciting and fascinating. RD, from being an inoperable problem to one where surgery has an over 90% success rate, is probably one of the greatest success stories in the world of m...

Determination of the dorso-ventral dimension of the vertebrate retina is known to involve retinoic acid (RA), in that high RA activates expression of a ventral retinaldehyde dehydrogenase and low RA of a dorsal dehydrogenase. Here we show that in the early eye vesicle of the mouse embryo, expression of the dorsal dehydrogenase is preceded by, and transiently overlaps with, the RA-degrading oxid...

PURPOSE To evaluate the role of fluorescent antibodies as a means of enhancing the detection of retinal breaks during vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. METHODS In ex vivo studies, unfixed, porcine retinal flatmounts were incubated with Cy3 anti-GFAP. Experiments were repeated in the presence of excess soluble GFAP and after surface excimer laser ablation through the internal l...

background degenerative retinal diseases, including age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and hereditary retinal dystrophies are major causes of blindness. the principal defect in these diseases is cell loss which is amenable to both cell based neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies. to briefly review the lines of research and potential candidates for cell based therapies among r...

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the ability to convert to different types of cells and after dividing, they can produce their own cells or other cells. Axons of the retinal ganglion cells, from the optic nerve. These cells lose the ability to regenerate themselves before birth. Optic nerve degeneration can result from various causes including increased intraocular pressure, comp...
