Fractional differential equations (FDEs) have attracted in the recent years a considerable interest due to their frequent appearance in various fields and their more accurate models of systems under consideration provided by fractional derivatives. For example, fractional derivatives have been used successfully to model frequency dependent damping behavior of many viscoelastic materials. They a...

This paper develops appropriate boundary conditions for the two-sided fractional diffusion equation, where the usual second derivative in space is replaced by a weighted average of positive and negative fractional derivatives. Mass preserving, reflecting boundary conditions for two-sided fractional diffusion involve a balance of left and right fractional derivatives at the boundary. Stable, con...

In some real world problems, fractional-order models are found to be more adequate than integer-order models. Fractional derivatives provide an excellent tool for the description of memory and hereditary properties of various materials and processes. The mathematical modelling of systems and processes in the fields of physics, chemistry, aerodynamics, electro dynamics of complex medium, polymer...

This paper develops strong solutions and stochastic solutions for the tempered fractional diffusion equation on bounded domains. First the eigenvalue problem for tempered fractional derivatives is solved. Then a separation of variables and eigenfunction expansions in time and space are used to write strong solutions. Finally, stochastic solutions are written in terms of an inverse subordinator.

Anomalous diffusion with ballistic scaling is characterized by a linear spreading rate with respect to time that scales like pure advection. Ballistic scaling may be modeled with a symmetric Riesz derivative if the spreading is symmetric. However, ballistic scaling coupled with a skewness is observed in many applications, including hydrology, nuclear physics, viscoelasticity, and acoustics. The...

Anomalous dispersion is observed throughout hydrology, yielding a contaminant plume with heavy leading tails. The fractional advection dispersion equation (FADE) captures this behavior by replacing the second-order spatial derivative with a Riemann-Liouville (RL) fractional derivative. The RL fractional derivative is a nonlocal operator and models large jumps of solute particles in heterogeneou...

Tempered fractional derivatives originated from the tempered fractional diffusion equations (TFDEs) modeled on the whole space R (see [?]). For numerically solving TFDEs, two kinds of generalized Laguerre functions were defined and some important properties were proposed to establish the approximate theory. The related prototype tempered fractional differential problems was proposed and solved ...

Space fractional derivatives have been used instead of integer operators with success in a variety of practical applications to study and describe transport processes in media characterized by spatial connectivity properties and high structural heterogeneity altering the classical laws of diffusion. This study provides an implementation of space fractional FitzHugh-Nagumo model of excitable med...

A fourth-order compact difference approximation is derived for the space fractional derivatives by using the weighted average of the shifted Grunwald formulae combining the compact technique. The properties of proposed fractional difference quotient operator are presented and proved. Then the new approximation formula is applied to solving the space fractional diffusion equations. By the energy...

Continuous limits of discrete systems with long-range interactions are considered. The map of discrete models into continuous medium models is defined. A wide class of long-range interactions that give the fractional equations in the continuous limit is discussed. The one-dimensional systems of coupled oscillators for this type of longrange interactions are considered. The discrete equations of...
