Crystallographic studies of neuraminidase-sialic acid complexes indicate that sialic acid is distorted on binding the enzyme. Three arginine residues on the enzyme interact with the carboxylate group of the sugar which is observed to be equatorial to the saccharide ring as a consequence of its distorted geometry. The glycosidic oxygen is positioned within hydrogen-bonding distance of Asp-151, i...

Novel macrocyclic saccharide receptors that possess terpyridine skeletons as a hydrogen-bonding site are presented. On modification of the hydrogen-bonding sites and the macrocyclic bridges, the receptors showed selective bindings for ribofuranosides, deoxyribofuranosides, and glucopyranosides, respectively. The binding affinities of the receptors were very high, so that native monosaccharides ...

1. A dextran synthesized by Leuconoatoc mesenteroides (strainNRRL B-512) has been partly hydrolysed with acid and the products were fractionated on charcoal-Celite. 2. Glucose was the only monosaccharide product and the dito hexa-saccharide fractions each contained a single component. 3. The oligosaccharides have been characterized as the lower members of the isomaltodextrin series and new crys...

While the complexes between boronic acids and diols have been studied for decades, researchers continue to design new and interesting methods to use these interactions to produce saccharide sensors that are more sensitive and selective. Herein we discuss how the use of pattern-based colorimetric arrays from a collection of crossreactive sensors have been developed as new differential sensing pl...

The positions of the ordered hydrogen isotopes of a protein and its bound solvent can be determined by using neutron crystallography. Furthermore, by collecting neutron data at cryo temperatures, the dynamic disorder within a protein crystal is reduced, which may lead to improved definition of the nuclear density. It has proved possible to cryo-cool very large Con A protein crystals (>1.5 mm3) ...

The honey bee, the world's most important agricultural pollinator, relies exclusively on plant-derived foods for nutrition. Nectar and pollen collected by honey bees are processed and matured within the nest through the activities of honey bee-derived microbes and enzymes. In order to better understand the contribution of the microbial community to food processing in the honey bee, we generated...

Microencapsulation is a process in which solid, liquid or gas components are covered with a septum. The present study has focused on the effect of stirring to produce ferric saccharide capsules withalginate coating applying the coacervation method so that we can obtain the best capsules forfortification of hydrated and dehydrated food products. At first, three methods, including stirrer,ultra-so...

The capsular polysaccharide of Sphaerotilus natans has been isolated, purified, and analyzed. Chromatographic and chemical analyses performed on acid hydrolyzates of the purified material have shown that the major components are fucose, galactose, glucose, and glucuronic acid in approximately equimolar amounts. Glucose and glucuronic acid are believed to occur as an aldobiuronic acid unit.
