Relative to genomes of other sequenced organisms, the human genome appears particularly enriched for large, highly homologous segmental duplications (> or =90% sequence identity and > or =10 kbp in length). The molecular basis for this enrichment is unknown. We sought to gain insight into the mechanism of origin, by systematically examining sequence features at the junctions of duplications. We...

BACKGROUND Nonimmune-mediated glomerulonephropathies are rarely reported in domestic animals with the exception of amyloidosis. Here we describe the pathological features and clinical course of a feline with protein-losing nonimmune-mediated glomerulonephropathy characterized by segmental glomerulosclerosis and severe podocyte injury. CASE PRESENTATION A castrated male Japanese domestic cat a...

In most speaker recognition systems speech utterances are not constrained in content or language. In a text-dependent speaker recognition system lexical content of speech and language are known in advance. The goal of this paper is to show that this information can be used by a segmental features (SF) approach to improve a standard Gaussian mixture model with MFCC features (GMM-MFCC). Speech fe...

A patient with a lymphatic cyst of the descending colon is reported. He underwent segmental resection of the colon. The clinical features, pathology, radiology, and treatment of these lesions are reviewed. It is emphasized that these cysts are very rare and cannot be diagnosed radiologically, but must be included in the differential diagnosis of polypoid lesions of the colon.

A second biopsy showed features characteristic of collapsing glomerulopathy (see Figure 1). The patient focal segmental glomerulosclerosis; visceral epithelial cell; nephrotic syndrome developed systemic hypertension, progressive anasarca, and renal insufficiency, and was initiated on maintenance haemodialysis in April 1993. In November 1993 the patient received a renal

Primary segmental volvulus (PSV) of the ileum in neonate occurs rarely but shows an aggressive clinical course. Thus, early diagnosis is important to prevent necrosis and perforation of the intestine. We report a case of PSV of the ileum in a 2-day-old female neonate whose clinical features and radiologic findings appeared to be meconium plug syndrome.

Spinal-generated movement disorders (SGMDs) include spinal segmental myoclonus, propriospinal myoclonus, orthostatic tremor, secondary paroxysmal dyskinesias, stiff person syndrome and its variants, movements in brain death, and painful legs-moving toes syndrome. In this paper, we review the relevant anatomy and physiology of SGMDs, characterize and demonstrate their clinical features, and pres...

A 24 years old male, who presented to us with uraemic symptoms secondary to chronic glomerulonephritis. On examination, he was found to have features of peripheral neuropathy which was confirmed as Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1 on nerve conduction studies. INTRODUCTION Class III and IV are the most ominous among the classes of lupus nephritis (LN) and there are contradictory reports on whether LN class IV-G (global) differs from LN class IV-S (segmental) as envisaged by the International Society of Nephrology and the Renal Pathology Society (ISN/RPS) 2003 classification. These subcategories are not validated for LN class III. This study was desig...
