Using a known algebraic result, we obtain finite polynomial programming reformulation of semi-infinite program modeling the aircraft deconfliction problem via subliminal speed regulation. Solving yields better results than state art for most tested instances.

This paper deals with the characterization of the sums of compact convex sets with linear subspaces, simplices, sandwiches (convex hulls of pairs of parallel affine manifolds) and parallelotopes in terms of the so-called internal and conical representations, topological and geometrical properties. In particular, it is shown that a closed convex set is a sandwich if and only if its relative boun...

In applications of Bayesian analysis one problem that arises is the evaluation of the sensitivity, or robustness, of the adopted inferential procedure with respect to the components of the formulated statistical model. In particular, it is of interest to study robustness with respect to the prior, when this latter cannot be uniquely elicitated, but a whole class Γ of probability measures, agree...

We consider an optimization problem for spatial power distribution generated by an array of transmitting elements. Using ultrasound hyperthermia cancer treatment as a motivating example, the signal design problem consists of optimizing the power distribution across the tumor and healthy tissue regions, respectively. The models used in the optimization problem are, however, invariably subject to...

In this work we study the variational inequality problem in finite dimensional spaces. The constraint set we consider has the structure of semi-infinite programming. Standard convergence analysis for outer approximation methods includes boundedness of the constraint set, or, alternatively, coerciveness of the data. Using recession tools, we are able to replace these assumptions by the hypothese...

A unified quadratic semi-infinite programming approach is introduced to solve digital filter design problems with time or frequency-domain specification. An algorithm based on this approach is developed and the corresponding convergence result is presented. This computational method is then applied to the optimum filter design problems subject to time and frequency domain specifications, namely...

In this paper we study uniqueness of Lagrange multipliers in optimization problems subject to cone constraints. The main tool in our investigation of this question will be a calculus of dual (polar) cones. We give sufficient and in some cases necessary conditions for uniqueness of Lagrange multipliers in general Banach spaces. General results are then applied to two particular examples of the s...

In this paper we develop new extremal principles in variational analysis that deal with finite and infinite systems of convex and nonconvex sets. The results obtained, unified under the name of tangential extremal principles, combine primal and dual approaches to the study of variational systems being in fact first extremal principles applied to infinite systems of sets. The first part of the p...

The purpose of this paper is twofold. First to present a brief survey of some of the basic results related to the univariate moment problem, including Prékopa's dual approach for solving the discrete moment problem. Second we propose a new method for solving the continuous power moment problem when some higher order divided differences of the objective function are nonnegative. The proposed met...

In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear dynamic systems with terminal state and continuous inequality constraints. Our aim is to design an optimal feedback controller that minimizes total system cost and ensures satisfaction of all constraints. We first formulate this problem as a semi-infinite optimization problem. We then show that by using a new exact penalty approach, this semi-infi...
