Results from near-infrared 1.5 – 2.5 µm long-slit spectroscopy of 14 nearby Seyfert galaxies are presented.
We present NICMOS imaging of broad band and molecular hydrogen emission in Seyfert galaxies. In 6/10 Seyferts we detect resolved or extended emission in the 1-0 S(1)λ2.121μm or 1-0 S(3)λ1.9570μm molecular hydrogen lines. We did not detect emission in the most distant galaxy or in the 2 Seyfert 1 galaxies in our sample because of the luminosity of the nuclear point sources. In NGC 5643, NGC 2110...
Active galaxies are often associated with starbursts, which are possible sources of fuelling for the nuclear black holes. By means of optical (3500 − 7500 Å) spectroscopic and narrow-band photometric data (Hα + [NII]λ6548,6583 and [OIII]λ5007) it is possible to detect starburst features in active nuclei and to study the correlation with Seyfert type and the surrounding environment. Here we pres...
We model the spectral energy distribution of the type 1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548, fitting data from simultaneous optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring observations. We assume a geometry consisting of a hot central Comptonizing region surrounded by a thin accretion disk. The properties of the disk and the hot central region are determined by the feedback occurring between the hot Comptonizing region ...
We estimate black hole masses in Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies at the basis of their X-ray excess variance. We apply the standard approach appropriate for Broad Line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies. In general, we find that the obtained masses are by a factor∼ 20 too small to agree with values obtained from other methods (reverberation, stellar dispersion). However, a small subset of our NLS1...
In order to examine how narrow emission-line flux ratios depend on the Seyfert type, we compiled various narrow emission-line flux ratios of 355 Seyfert galaxies from the literature. We present in this paper that the intensity of the high-ionization emission lines, [Fe vii]λ6087, [Fe x]λ6374 and [Ne v]λ3426, tend to be stronger in Seyfert 1 galaxies than in Seyfert 2 galaxies. In addition to th...
We present a new method for the statistical investigation into the distributions of the angle β between the radio axis and the normal to the galactic disk for a sample of Seyfert galaxies. We discuss how further observations of the sample galaxies can strengthen the conclusions. Our data are consistent with the hypothesis that AGN jets are oriented randomly in space, independent of the position...
Broad-line radio galaxies (BLRGs) are active galactic nuclei that produce powerful, large-scale radio jets, but appear as Seyfert 1 galaxies in their optical spectra. In the X-ray band, BLRGs also appear like Seyfert galaxies, but with flatter spectra and weaker reflection features. One explanation for these properties is that the X-ray continuum is diluted by emission from the jet. Here, we pr...
The principal results on active galactic nuclei from the Phase 1 observations by the COMPTON Gamma Ray Observatory are presented. These include the detection of a new class of high-energy gamma ray sources by the EGRET instrument and extensive observations of Seyfert galaxies in low-energy gamma rays by OSSE. The identified EGRET sources are associated with core-dominated radio loud objects, OV...
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 533 obtained with FUSE . These spectra show narrow asymmetrical O VIλλ1032,1038 emission lines with stronger wings shortward of the peak wavelength, but the degree of asymmetry of these wings in velocity is much lower than that of the wings of the lines of lower ionization. In the combined O VIprofile there are marginal indications ...
