Quantum wires with spin-orbit coupling provide a unique opportunity to simultaneously control the coupling strength and the screened Coulomb interactions where new exotic phases of matter can be explored. Here we report on the observation of an exotic spin-orbit density wave in Pb-atomic wires on Si(557) surfaces by mapping out the evolution of the modulated spin-texture at various conditions w...

BSTRACT A matrix formalism for polarization calculation, as well as its omparison with other methods, is briefly discussed. The prediction for PEAR is compared with experimental measurements. An estimate is offered or the transverse polarization for PEP. Various schemes for obtaining he longitudinal polarization in PEP are studied. \ITRODUCTION As we know, PEP has now been officially dedicated ...

The relationship between magnetic order and ferroelectric properties has been investigated for MnWO4 with a long-wavelength magnetic structure. Spontaneous electric polarization is observed in an elliptical spiral spin phase. The magnetic-field dependence of electric polarization indicates that the noncollinear spin configuration plays a key role for the appearance of the ferroelectric phase. A...

We consider a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling placed in a perpendicular magnetic field and calculate the magnitude and direction of the electric-field-induced spin polarization. We find that in strong magnetic fields the polarization becomes an oscillatory function of the magnetic field and that the amplitude of these oscillations is parametrically larger than t...

A mesoscopic spin valve is used to determine the dynamic spin polarization of electrons tunneling out of and into ferromagnetic (FM) transition metals at finite voltages. The dynamic polarization of electrons tunneling out of the FM slowly decreases with increasing bias but drops faster and even inverts with voltage when electrons tunnel into it. A free-electron model shows that in the former c...

We have investigated the polarization-resolved photoluminescence (PL) in an asymmetric n-type GaAs/AlAs/GaAlAs resonant tunneling diode under magnetic field parallel to the tunnel current. The quantum well (QW) PL presents strong circular polarization (values up to -70% at 19 T). The optical emission from GaAs contact layers shows evidence of highly spin-polarized two-dimensional electron and h...

Ferromagnetic contacts put in proximity with carbon nanotubes induce spin and orbital polarizations. These polarizations affect dramatically the Kondo correlations occurring in quantum dots formed in a carbon nanotube, inducing effective fields in both spin and orbital sectors. As a consequence, the carbon nanotube quantum dot spectral density shows a fourfold split SU(4) Kondo resonance. Furth...

The spin diffusion and drift at different excitation wavelengths and different temperatures have been studied in undoped InGaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW). The spin polarization was created by optical spin orientation using circularly polarized light, and the reciprocal spin Hall effect was employed to measure the spin polarization current. We measured the ratio of the spin diffusion co...

Andreev reflection at a Pb/CrO(2) point contact has been used to determine the spin polarization of single-crystal CrO(2) films made by chemical vapor deposition. The spin polarization is found to be 0.96 +/- 0.01, which confirms that CrO(2) is a half-metallic ferromagnet, as theoretically predicted.

Andreev reflection in ferromagnet-superconductor junctions is derived in a regime in which Zeeman splitting dominates the response of the superconductor to an applied magnetic field. Spin-up and spin-down Andreev reflections are shown to be resolved as voltage is increased. In the metallic limit, the transition from Andreev to tunnel conductivity in the spin-up channels has a non trivial behavi...
