We demonstrate a three stage procedure for mine detection. The rst phase locates plausible candidates through a series of hypothesis tests. The second state nds the globally optimal convex set containing each candidate using \coarse-tone" dynamic programming. The third stage re nes the mine shape estimates using the knowledge contained in a mine-shape library.

Escherichia coli cells contain potential division sites at midcell and adjacent to the cell poles. Selection of the correct division site at midcell is controlled by three proteins: MinC, MinD, and MinE. It has previously been shown (D. Raskin and P. de Boer, Cell 91:685-694, 1997) that MinE-Gfp localizes to the midcell site in an MinD-dependent manner. We use here Gfp-MinD to show that MinD as...

Pole-to-pole oscillations of the Min proteins in Escherichia coli are required for the proper placement of the division septum. Direct interaction of MinE with the cell membrane is critical for the dynamic behavior of the Min system. In vitro, this MinE-membrane interaction led to membrane deformation; however, the underlying mechanism remained unclear. Here we report that MinE-induced membrane...

In western United States, both mine reclamations and renewed mining at previously abandoned mines have increased substantially in the last decade. This increased activity may adversely impact bats that use these mines for roosting. Townsend’s big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii) is a species of conservation concern that may be impacted by ongoing mine reclamation and renewedmineral extractio...

The German Rhineland is home to the world's largest opencast lignite coal mine and human-made hole e the Hambach mine. Over the last seven years, RWE, the mine operator, has faced an increase in militant resistance, culminating in the occupation of the Hambacher Forest and acts of civil disobedience and sabotage. The mine provides a European case study to examine the repressive techniques deplo...

BACKGROUND The use of formative research as a critical component of intervention planning is highly supported in the literature. However, studies that report such processes in practice are minimal. This paper reports on the formative data collection and analysis that informed the development of a multilevel intervention that utilizes mine assessment technology to bridge health communication bet...

Remedial mine detection and the detection of unexploded ordnance (UXO) have become very important for humanitarian reasons. This paper addresses mine detection using commonly used Electromagnetic Induction sensors. We propose and evaluate two neural network approaches to mine detection which provide a robust non-parametric technique, based on training the networks using data from a previously c...

There are more than 100 million land mines buried throughout the world, and, at present, the removal of these mines is primarily being done by hand. Our research group has suggested a mine detection method using six-legged robots, such as COMET-I, II, and III, to establish the land mine detection and removal technology. Mine detection by six-legged robots such as COMET-II and III have two manip...

Placement of the division site at midcell in Escherichia coli requires the MinE protein. MinE acts by imparting topological specificity to the MinCD division inhibitor, preventing the inhibitor from acting at the midcell site while permitting it to block division at other unwanted sites along the length of the cell. It was previously shown that MinE assembled into a ring structure that appeared...

The Min proteins (MinC, MinD, and MinE) form a pole-to-pole oscillator that controls the spatial assembly of the division machinery in Escherichia coli cells. Previous studies identified that interactions of MinD with phospholipids positioned the Min machinery at the membrane. We extend these studies by measuring the affinity, kinetics, and ATPase activity of E. coli MinD, MinE, and MinDE bindi...
