Two atmospheric responses to simulated astrophysical ionizing radiation events significant to life on Earth are production of odd-nitrogen species, especially NO2, and subsequent depletion of stratospheric ozone. Ozone depletion increases incident short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (UVB, 280-315 nm) and longer (>600 nm) wavelengths of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR, 400-700 nm)...

Photochemical damage either to retinoids by near-ultraviolet radiation or to unsaturated fatty acids by near-ultraviolet radiation in the presence of a hydrophobic photosensitizer destroys the virucidal activities of the compounds, as determined by studies on the enveloped bacteriophage ø6.

Antioxidant capabilities of scoparone, the component of Artemisia scoparia and other medicinal plants, against lipid peroxidation induced by ultraviolet radiation or Fenton reaction have been analyzed. Lipid peroxidation was monitored by measuring the absorption spectra of the conjugated dienes and quantified by the Klein oxidation index. Obtained results imply that scoparone is a very efficien...

A new source-based radiometry beamline was recently constructed at the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility (SURF III). The goal of this beamline is to establish a national source standard with a wide spectral range from the far ultraviolet to the infrared by using the calculability of SURF III. The new beamline is a straight-through white-light beamline with few, if any, optical componen...

background: seaweeds contain significant quantities of lipids, protein, vitamins and minerals. aquavac ergosan contains 1% alginic acid extracted from two brown seaweeds, laminaria digitata and ascophyllum nodosum. both in vivo and in-vitro researches have mainly been focused on the effect of ergosan on fish growth, survival rate, reproductive performance and innate immunity in blood and epider...

Malignant melanoma of the skin (CMM) is associated with ultraviolet radiation exposure, but the mechanisms and even the wavelengths responsible are unclear. Here we use a mammalian model to investigate melanoma formed in response to precise spectrally defined ultraviolet wavelengths and biologically relevant doses. We show that melanoma induction by ultraviolet A (320-400 nm) requires the prese...

The luminescent properties of solid solutions Y 1-x Sc x PO 4 : 0.5 mol.% Eu 3+ (x=0,0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1) under excitation by ultraviolet and vacuum-ultraviolet radiation were studied. influence disorder the crystal structure in on luminescence spectra is shown. A non-linear dependence values optical band gap solution composition was obtained a model suggested to explain this effect. Key...

PURPOSE Ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced oxidative stress plays a significant role in the progression of cataracts. This study investigated the photoprotective effect of fisetin on UV radiation-induced oxidative stress in human lens epithelial cells and the possible molecular mechanism involved. METHODS SRA01/04 cells exposed to different doses of ultraviolet B (UVB) were cultured with vari...

We have evaluated the effect of shortwave ultraviolet radiation on bacterial levels in an operating theatre, both in experimental conditions and during 20 hip operations. When compared with the use of sham blue light, there was a significant reduction in the number of bacteria. The reduced level was comparable with that suggested for ultraclean air ventilation systems.
