An 18-year-old female patient with unilateral hearing loss underwent evaluation with CT and MR imaging. A partially ossified, enhancing lesion in the bony labyrinth, with replacement of adjacent structures, was identified. Surgical biopsy revealed a meningioma arising primarily within the bony labyrinth. To our knowledge, this entity has not been previously described.

We have studied the cerebral activity for the depth perception of the Necker cube by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Three types of line drawing figures were used as stimuli, the Necker cube, hidden line elimination cube and overlapping squares. Subjects were instructed to perceive both orientations of the depth of the Necker cube. They were instructed to shift their attention voluntaril...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate surgery results, we established a novel method to digitize nasal morphology with the use of Hausdorff distance and analyzed nose morphology after cheiloplasty. STUDY DESIGN We evaluated the naris after primary cheiloplasty of 30 unilateral cleft lip and palate patients. Similarity between left and right sides was assessed by visual evaluation, area ratio, perimeter ratio...

The cat's retinogeniculate pathway is largely composed of X and Y axons, which represent two distinct neuronal streams organized in parallel. Our earlier data, summarized in the previous paper, suggest that the postnatal development of retinogeniculate axon arbors is characterized by competitive interactions between the X and Y axons. Thus, during development, X arbors in lamina A or A1 are ini...

In this study, we compare binocular and monocular mechanisms underlying contrast encoding by binocular simple cells in primary visual cortex. At mid to high levels of stimulus contrast, contrast gain of cortical neurons typically decreases as stimulus contrast is increased (). We have devised a technique by which it is possible to determine the relative contributions of monocular and binocular ...

Diplopia (seeing double) is an ophthalmologic complaint found mainly in elder patients. It can have both ocular and neurological causes. A careful history and clinical examination must detail the type of diplopia (monocular/ binocular), onset, and progression, associated and relieving factors. In case of monocular diplopia, refraction and biomicroscopic examination of the ocular media are manda...

OBJECTIVES For healthy women at high risk of developing breast cancer, a bilateral mastectomy can reduce future risk. For women who already have unilateral breast cancer, removing the contralateral healthy breast is more difficult to justify. We examined trends in the number of women who had a bilateral mastectomy in England between 2002 and 2011. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study using the H...

Visual rivalry is thought to be a distributed process that simultaneously takes place at multiple levels in the visual processing hierarchy. Also, the different types of rivalry, such as binocular and monocular rivalry, are thought to engage shared underlying mechanisms. We hypothesized that the amount of perceptual suppression during rivalry as measured by the total duration of fully exclusive...

The effects of monocular deprivation (MD) on the ocular dominance of visual cortical neurons are a paradigmatic example of experience-dependent plasticity. Here we review recent data showing that extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in the control of experience-dependent plasticity both in the developing and adult visual cortex.

PURPOSE To evaluate whether very early treatment for congenital unilateral cataract results in better long-term functional outcomes, grating acuity, contrast sensitivity, recognition acuity, and random-dot stereoacuity were evaluated in two groups of children. METHODS Grating acuity and contrast sensitivity data were obtained with standard forced-choice protocols. Stereoacuity data were obtai...
