Male Wistar-strain rats which had been fed a calcium-oxalate lithogenic diet (a glycolate diet) developed urinary calculi in 4 weeks. Sodium pyruvate or CG-120 (a mixture of citrate salts) had been added to this diet to determine its effect in preventing lithogenicity. Rats in the group fed a pyruvate diet had, however, almost no stones in the urinary system. Rats in the CG-120 group showed res...

Silicate urinary calculi are rare in humans, with an incidence of 0.2% of all urinary calculi. Most cases were related to excess ingestion of silicate, typically by taking magnesium trisilicate as an antacid for peptic ulcers over a long period of time; however, there also existed unrelated cases, whose mechanism of development remains unclear. On the other hand, zonisamide, a newer antiepilept...

bstructive uropathy is a common clinical problem, and urethral calculi constitute the least common form of calculous disease leading to obstructive uropathy. Urethral calculi may originate anywhere in the urinary tract, usually the bladder, and then migrate to the urethra. The clinical presentation is variable. Patients may have acute retention, dysuria, or a weak urine stream.1 Sonography is a...

PURPOSE To retrospectively evaluate radiation dose, image quality, and the ability to differentiate urinary calculi of differing compositions by using low-dose dual-energy computed tomography (CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS The institutional review board approved this retrospective study; informed consent was waived. A low-dose dual-energy CT protocol (tube voltage and reference effective tube cu...

Urolithiasis is the third most common urological disease affecting the urinary tract. However, the risk factors that may influnce the calculous kidney damage is still unclear and needs further evaluation. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 661 patients who presented to our hospital and underwent surgery for urolithiasis. All laboratory test results were obtained operatively, within a we...

The increased urinary oxalate excretion which is characteristic of primary hyperoxaluria causes recurrent urinary calculi and nephrocalcinosis, with death at an early age (Hall, Scowen, and Watts, 1960; Hockaday, Clayton, Frederick, and Smith, 1964), and no effective treatment for the disease has been reported. Glyoxylate is the main immediate metabolic precursor of oxalate, and if the enzyme o...

Frequency of urinary tract infection was determined in 82 patients with urolithiasis and in 40 patients with an indwelling Catheter. Significantly high proportion of adult patients with renal and vesical calculi were infected while children with bladder stones had high proportion of sterile urine. Indwelling catheter was associated with a high rate of urinary infection (JPMA 31:254,1981).

We report the case of a 3-year-old boy with urinary tract malformation (left sided stenosis of the ureteropelvic junction) which was precipitating factor for ensuing nephrolithiasis of the left kidney during the therapy with ceftriaxone. The treatment with spasmolytics was initiated, together with the forced parentheral hydration. After 3 weeks, there was no evidence of calculi in the urinary t...

The present review represents a concise and complete survey of the literature covering 2004-2009, concerning the mass spectrometric techniques involved in the structural investigation of renal calculi. After a short presentation of the fundamental mass spectrometric techniques (MALDI-TOF, QTOF, MS-MS) as well as hyphenated methods (GC-MS, LC-MS, CE-MS), an extensive study of the urinary proteom...
