Severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) in a multimorbid 77 year old female was treated with transapical aortic valve implantation with a 23 mm Edwards Sapien valve. Severe valvular regurgitation following implantation, probably due to structural valve failure, was treated successfully with a second valve-in-valve implantation. During a follow-up time of 2,5 years no further problems occurred.

We tested the hypotheses that Doppler echocardiography has a higher accuracy than clinical evaluation in the detection of significant aortic and mitral valvular heart disease and that Doppler echocardiography is highly accurate as compared with cardiac catheterization for the assessment of valvular disease severity. Thus, cardiac catheterization for the assessment of valve lesion severity may b...

Indicator dilution technique is more widely used during cardiac catheterization for the diagnosis and rough estimate of the size of intracardiac shunts and valvular regurgitation (Korner and Shillingford, 1955; Fox and Wood, 1957; Swan and Wood, 1957; Woodward et al., 1957; Shillingford, 1958; Carter et al., 1959; Carleton et al., 1960; Jose et al., 1960). Evans blue dye (T-1824) has long been ...

OBJECTIVE Poststreptococcal reactive arthritis (ReA) is a (poly)arthritis presenting after a Streptococcus group A infection. Acute rheumatic fever (ARF), albeit caused by the same pathogen, has different risk characteristics and is considered to be a separate entity. Whereas ARF is known to cause carditis, the risk of carditis in adult poststreptococcal ReA is unknown. Consequently, the prevai...

BACKGROUND Dilated cardiomyopathy can lead to a variety of complications recognisable on clinical, echocardiographic, electrocardiographic and radiographic assessment. Among this, transthoracic echocardiography has the dual advantage of being helpful in making the diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy as well as an effective tool in early recognition of certain complications for timely management...

BACKGROUND Clinical relevance of association of cabergoline use for hyperprolactinemia and cardiac valvulopathy remains unclear. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of valvular heart abnormalities in patients taking cabergoline for the treatment of prolactinoma and to explore any associations with the cumulative dose of drug used. DESIGN A cross-sectional echocard...

Direct examination of the aortic orifice at the level of the aortic valves (aortic valvular orifice area, AVOA) in the short-axis plane was performed with a 3 MHz two-dimensional pulsed Doppler echocardiographic apparatus. The AVOA was mapped with the Doppler gate to detect or rule out the presence of a regurgitant aortic valvular area (RAVA) established by recording of abnormal diastolic Doppl...

Bicuspid aortic valve is the most common form of congenital heart disease. It is associated with both valvular pathology and aortic disease. Aortic regurgitation caused by a bicuspid aortic valve can be corrected by surgical valve repair, which has good short-term results. However, the significant rate of aortic regurgitation recurrence found on long-term follow-up remains a problem, partly bec...
