The main objective of this paper was the selection of promising bacterial strains to be used as potential tools to remove phenols in olive mill wastewater (OMW) or in other food wastes. Therefore, 12 OMW samples were analyzed and 119 isolates were collected. After a preliminary screening on a medium containing vanillic and cinnamic acids, three isolates were selected to evaluate their viability...

Wildfires and their emissions have significant impacts on ecosystems, climate, atmospheric chemistry, and carbon cycling. Well-dated proxy records are needed to study the long-term climatic controls on biomass burning and the associated climate feedbacks. There is a particular lack of information about long-term biomass burning variations in Siberia, the largest forested area in the Northern He...

− Seven phenolic compounds including p-coumaric acid (1), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (2), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (3), vanillic acid (4), luteolin (5), acacetin (6), and tricin (7), were isolated from the methylene chloride and ethyl acetate fractions of Echinochloa utilis grains. Compounds (1 4, 6) were isolated for the first time from this plant. These compounds were tested for inhibitory activities...

Coupling of diazotized p-nitroaniline to catecholamines and their metabolites in urine has been proposed for use in screening for secreting neuroblastoma in childhood. We have coupled diazotized p-nitroaniline to catecholamines, derivatives, and metabolites and examined the reaction products by thin-layer chromatography and physico-chemical methods (ultraviolet spectra, mass spectroscopy, nucle...

Cranberry consumption has shown prophylactic effects against urinary tract infections (UTI), although the mechanisms involved are not completely understood. In this paper, cranberry phenolic compounds and their potential microbial-derived metabolites (such as simple phenols and benzoic, phenylacetic and phenylpropionic acids) were tested for their capacity to inhibit the adherence of uropathoge...

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) are renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic biopolymers; however, they have not been widely adopted as an additive by the food industry. In this study, CNF functionality was improved through chemical modification. Antioxidant antimicrobial were produced esterification of with phenolic acids. esterified vanillic or cinnamic acid using two different esterifying agents: ...

The preparation of a series of N-hydroxy peptides is described, along with their acylation on the oxygen of the pseudopeptide bond. Nineteen N-acyloxy peptides, first examples of this new class of pseudopeptides, were thus synthesized; they present a range of acyl groups, including N-protected amino acyl groups. Possibilities of elongation for these pseudopeptides were also investigated.

[1] The Carrington Event of 1859 is considered to be among the largest space weather events of the last 150 years. We show that only one out of 14 well-resolved ice core records from Greenland and Antarctica has a nitrate spike dated to 1859. No sharp spikes are observed in the Antarctic cores studied here. In Greenland numerous spikes are observed in the 40 years surrounding 1859, but where ot...

A systematic two-step procedure for the structural identification of bioprocesses is followed in order to establish a mechanistic model for vanillin production by Pycnoporus cinnabarinus. The first step is devoted to the identification of the underlying reaction structure and the development of a validated mass balance model for the growth of P. cinnabarinus and the biotransformation of vanilli...
