We present a technique called ow surface probes for interactive visualization of 3D steady vector elds. The user places in the ow eld an arbitrarily-shaped seed surface, which is then deformed over time by the local or global 3D vector eld, producing an animation sequence. This sequence and individual frames are used to probe the behavior of the ow eld.

Critical gravitational collapse was first found by Choptuik[1] in simulations of a spherically symmetric massless scalar field. A natural question to pose is then how critical collapse behaves when the scalar field has a mass, since this will introduce a characteristic length that destroys the scale invariance of the field equations. This question was studied by Brady et. al.[2] The results of ...

Glyphs are a widespread technique to depict local properties of different kinds of fields. In this paper we present a new glyph for singularities in non-linear vector fields. We do not simply show the properties of the derivative at the singularities as most previous methods do, but instead illustrate the behavior that goes beyond the local linear approximation. We improve the concept of linear...

Although cooperative work is widely used in a daily basis, nonetheless cooperative work tools are not being used as their potential would suggest. Even though the reasons behind this fact are not completely clear, the truth is that users see current cooperative work tools as a burden to their working activities. To work around this problem, the notion of localityawareness can be extremely helpf...

Spot noise is a technique for texture synthesis, which is very useful for vector field visualization. This paper describes improvements and extensions of the basic principle of spot noise. First, better visualization of highly curved vector fields with spot noise is achieved, by adapting the shape of the spots to the local velocity field. Second, filtering of spots is proposed to eliminate unde...

In this paper we present an extended critical point concept which allows us to apply vector field topology in the case of unsteady flow. We propose a measure for unsteadiness which describes the rate of change of the velocities in a fluid element over time. This measure allows us to select particles for which topological properties remain intact inside a finite spatio-temporal neighborhood. One...

We discuss the problems to be solved to develop a web-based vector field visualization system. Furthermore we present the system CurVis as one solution of these problems. As part of the CurVus system, two new global visualization techniques for vector fields are introduced: curvature plots and IDraw. Their combined application as hybrid technique is discussed as well. Finally applications and e...

In this paper, we present two combinatorial methods to process 3-D steady vector fields, which both use graph algorithms to extract features from the underlying vector field. Combinatorial approaches are known to be less sensitive to noise than extracting individual trajectories. Both of the methods are a straightforward extension of an existing 2-D technique to 3-D fields. We observed that the...

This paper presents a new approach for Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation on a sphere. Standard approaches use the Euclidian metrics for the distance calculation of two points. However, for interpolation on a sphere, more naturally is computation of the distance as the shortest distance over the surface on a sphere, i.e. spherical distance of two points is more natural for interpolation ...
