Triangular Ag nanoprisms are a type of most-studied noble-metal nanostructures over the past decade owing to their special structural architecture and outstanding optical and catalytic properties for a wide range of applications. Nevertheless, in contrast to active research for the synthesis of phase-pure Ag nanoprisms, no asymmetric heterodimers containing Ag prisms have been developed so far,...

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was fabricated based on N-doped TiO2 for the detection of Hg(2+) through the quenching of photogenerated electrons. The N-doped TiO2 was synthesized by a sol-gel method with urea and tetrabutyl titanate as the N and Ti sources. Compared with the undoped TiO2, the N-doped TiO2 showed an enhanced photocurrent response under visible light (λ > 420 nm). ...

We demonstrate third-harmonic generation (THG) in a dispersion-engineered slow-light photonic crystal waveguide fabricated in AMTIR-1 chalcogenide glass. Owing to the relatively low loss and low dispersion in the slow-light (c/30) regime, combined with the high nonlinear figure of merit of the material (∼2), we obtain a relatively large conversion efficiency (1.4×10(-8)/W(2)), which is 30× high...

Intraocular light scatter is modeled through a stratified medium. It is shown that the eye lens possesses properties of an interference filter. In conditions that may mimic opacification, as found with cataract formation, such a filter may have stop zones with reflectance up to 1 in the band of visible light.

An instrument allowing the quantitative analysis of X-ray pulsed wavefronts is presented and its processing method explained. The system relies on the X-ray speckle tracking principle to accurately measure the phase gradient of the X-ray beam from which beam optical aberrations can be deduced. The key component of this instrument, a semi-transparent scintillator emitting visible light while tra...

Light reflections are one of the main and often underestimated issues of plasma emissivity reconstruction in visible light spectral range. Metallic and other specular components of tokamak generate systematic errors in the optical measurements that could lead to wrong interpretation of data. Our analysis is performed at data from the tokamak COMPASS. It is a D-shaped tokamak with specular metal...

We report the fabrication of transparent and flexible transistors where both the bottom gate and the conducting channel are carbon nanotube networks of different densities and Parylene N is the gate insulator. Device mobilities of 1 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and on/off ratios of 100 are obtained, with the latter influenced by the properties of the insulating layer. Repetitive bending has minor influenc...

A [Ir(ppy)2(dtb-bpy)]PF6-catalyzed intramolecular radical cyclization of o-iodophenylacrylamides affording indolin-2-ones in moderate to excellent yields via 5-exo-trig radical cyclization under visible light is presented. This method provides new access to the synthesis of indolin-2-ones under mild reaction conditions.

An image ultraviolet, visible light, or near infrared is projected onto the transparent window of the vacuum tube as shown in Fig. 1. The vacuum side of this window carries a sensitive layer called the photocathode. Light radiation causes the emission of electrons from the photocathode into the vacuum which are then accelerated by an applied DC voltage towards a luminescent screen (phosphor scr...

Invisibility cloaks, which used to be confined to the realm of fiction, have now been turned into a scientific reality thanks to the enabling theoretical tools of transformation optics and conformal mapping. Inspired by those theoretical works, the experimental realization of electromagnetic invisibility cloaks has been reported at various electromagnetic frequencies. All the invisibility cloak...
