OBJECTIVES To study the clinical aspects and frequency of scorpion stings in Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS Clinical aspects and frequency of scorpion sting cases reporting to 2 referral hospitals in the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia were analyzed during May 2006 to April 2008. Data on demographic status, date and time of sting, sting site, scorpion color, clinical manifestations, and...

Background: Jellyfish stings are one of the commonest causes marine animal related injuries in human. Despite mostly being harmless, box jellyfish species can cause major with fatalities or systemic envenoming symptoms. There 15–20 identified to be life-threatening. few reported cases that suggest presence deadly Malaysian coast. However, numbers around Malaysia still under reported. Materials ...

We report on a 6 year old patient with an unusual clinical presentation of WAS and oligoclonal proliferation of TCR+ large granular lymphocytes (LGL). Flow cytometry demonstrated two distinct populations of lymphocytes with strongly decreased (WASP-) or normal expression levels of WASP (WASP+), respectively. Molecular analysis confirmed a splice site mutation in intron 2 of the WASP gene in the...

N-WASP regulates the actin cytoskeleton through activation of the Arp2/3 complex. N-WASP localizes at the cell periphery, where it controls actin polymerization downstream of signal molecules such as adapter proteins, Cdc42, Src family kinases, and phosphoinositides. N-WASP also localizes in the nucleus; however, the role of N-WASP in the nucleus is unclear. Here, we show that localization of N...

This report deals with a father and his son who developed acute renal failure following multiple bee stings. The renal lesion in these patients appears to be due to rhabdomyolysis caused by the bee venom. The other mechanisms are also discussed. The need for clinicians to be aware of acute renal failure as a complication of bee stings is stressed.

Neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) regulates reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton through activation of the Arp2/3 complex. Here, we show that heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) regulates N-WASP-induced actin polymerization in cooperation with phosphorylation of N-WASP. HSP90 binds directly to N-WASP, but binding alone does not affect the rate of N-WASP/Arp2/3 complex-induced in vi...

Female diurnal velvet-ants are among the insects most strongly protected against predation. These protections include an exceedingly hard and tightly fitting integument, powerful legs rapid running ability, aposematic color, warning stridulation, odor, and, famously, legendarily stings. Small to medium-sized were rarely injured or killed in tests potential predators. Velvet-ant stings painful, ...

Aims. We present the discovery and characterisation of the exoplanets WASP-113b and WASP-114b by the WASP survey, SOPHIE and CORALIE. Methods. The planetary nature of the systems was established by performing follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations. The follow-up data were combined with the WASP-photometry and analysed with an MCMC code to obtain system parameters. Results. The hos...

BACKGROUND Jellyfish stings are a common occurrence among ocean goers worldwide with an estimated 150 million envenomations annually. Fatalities and hospitalizations occur annually, particularly in the Indo-Pacific regions. A new topical jellyfish sting inhibitor based on the mucous coating of the clown fish prevents 85% of jellyfish stings in laboratory settings. The field effectiveness is unk...
