The absorption of water in Langmuir–Blodgett fi lms of ferroelectric copolymers of polyvinylidene fl uoride with trifl uoroethylene is shown to depend upon the fi lm thickness. This water absorption can have a profound effect on the dielectric properties of the copolymer fi lms.

A perfusion technique has been used to quantitate the effect of the amino acids glycine and alanine and the dipeptides glycyl-glycine and glycyl-L-alanine on sodium and water absorption from the human jejunum. Although no net absorption of sodium and water was seen in the absence of non-electrolytes, a significant stimulation occurred in the presence of both free amino acids and dipeptides. In ...

Electrospun non-woven poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) microfiber meshes are described as biodegradable, mechanically robust, and reusable polymeric oil sorbents capable of selectively retrieving oil from simulated oil spills in both fresh and seawater scenarios. Hydrophobic PCL meshes have >99.5% (oil over water) oil selectivity and oil absorption capacities of ~10 grams of oil per gram of sorbent m...

With a mean precipitation rate, much lower than that of the world, Iran is among the countries that face severe water challenges. The present study has dealt with the evaluation of hydrochemistry of Faryab spring water in Hormozgan Province, Iran. Four different composite water samples have been analyzed to detect major anions, cations, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, pH, and s...

Water vapour concentrations are measured using the optical absorption of a Zeeman-split emission line of an argon discharge lamp. When a longitudinal magnetic field of the proper magnitude is used to split the emission line, two components of opposite circular polarization are produced: one coincident, and one off-resonance with respect to a water vapour absorption line at 10 687.36 cm−1. Diffe...

Introduction: Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) is the standard clinical intervention for the treatment of dehydration due to diarrhoea. It does not reduce the volume and frequency of duration of diarrhoea. This has prompted searching for improving ORS. One way of improving ORT may be delivering ORS in liposomes, to stimulate faster and more efficient absorption of water and electrolytes from smal...

Guanylin (GN) inhibited water absorption and short-circuit current (Isc) in seawater eel intestine. Similar inhibition was observed after bumetanide, and the effect of bumetanide was abolished by GN or vice versa, suggesting that both act on the same target, Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) cotransporter (NKCC), which is a key player for the Na(+)-K(+)-Cl(-) transport system responsible for water absorption i...

The propagation of electromagnetic radiation is affected by three major phenomena: absorption, scattering, and turbulence. Absorption by molecular water vapor is the dominant mechanism of tropospheric attenuation at millimeter and infrared wavelengths, especially in the marine environment. Therefore, the understanding and accurate modeling of absorption by this molecule are important to atmosph...

Appropriate control of diet and water intake is important for maintaining normal blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte homeostasis in the body. It is relatively understood that the amount of sodium and potassium intake directly affects blood pressure and regulates ion transporters; Na and K channel functions in the kidney. However, little is known about whether diet and water intake regulates A...

This paper introduces a novel depth recovery method based on light absorption in water. Water absorbs light at almost all wavelengths whose absorption coefficient is related to the wavelength. Based on the Beer-Lambert model, we introduce a bispectral depth recovery method that leverages the light absorption difference between two nearinfrared wavelengths captured with a distant point source an...
