Simple random walk considerations are used to interpret rodent population data collected in Hantavirus-related investigations in Panama regarding the short-tailed cane mouse, Zygodontomys brevicauda. The diffusion constant of mice is evaluated to be of the order of (and larger than) 200 meters squared per day. The investigation also shows that the rodent mean square displacement saturates in ti...

The quality of seedcane used by cane growers in South Africa has not reached the standards necessary to contain the spread of diseases and maintain varietal purity. Since the formation of Local Pest and Disease Control (LP & DC) Committees in 1982, a number of grower groups have established formal seedcane schemes to try to improve the quality ofseedcane. Six schemes are described. Each scheme ...

In this paper comments and observations on the first year's performance of a new shredder at Farleigh have been set down, together with an assessment of its operating characteristics. The shredder is of recent, heavy duty design having an anvil bar and breaker section covering an arc of 85" and is driven by two motors having a combined rating of 1400 horse-power. The results of test runs taken ...

Phylogeographical analyses that identify the geographical origin of parasites in invading species can clarify the parasites' potential for biological control of the invader and the risks posed by the parasite to native species. Our data on nuclear and mitochondrial genetic sequences show that the nematode lungworms (Rhabdias spp.) in invasive Australian populations of cane toads (Bufo marinus) ...

Various irrigation regimes were applied to NC0376 over five years of low rainfall (average 466 mm per annum). Cane yield increased, depending on amount of water applied, from 84 to 122 t/ha. There was no significant effect on quality. The lowest application of 660 mm of irrigation produced 69% of the yield produced by the standard (full) irrigation (1 520 mm) at 12 months of age. There were no ...

In preparation for an evaluation of night vision devices, an exploratory study was conducted to gain initial experience with the sensitivity of chosen mobility measures under night conditions. The measures included cane contacts and object recognition distances. Results provide preliminary evidence that these two measures may be sensitive to the effects of a night vision device.

The Coimbatore varieties Co. 213. 214. '281 are compared with Uba in a soil of poor agricultural qualities. The surface soil is a shallow loam with a very stiff clay subsoil. The field is on a low lying flat and drainage is difficult; the crop is also liable to suffer severely in drought. Further details and a partial chemical analysis of the soil are given in the report on the plant cane results.

This paper considers the application of a digital computer in a cane sugar factory to routine calculations. As the example, it considers in detail the application of computing to the very simple yet tedious calculations involved in the preparation of the Sugar Milling Research Institute's monthly summaries of laboratory reports. The success of this application immediately opens the field to the...
