It is well known that a large linking number induces an abrupt writhing of a circular rod with zero intrinsic curvature, i.e., the stress-free state of the rod is straight. We show here that for any rod with a uniform natural curvature, no matter how small the intrinsic curvature is, a twist will induce a continuous writhing from the circular configuration and the abrupt writhing is only the li...

The methanolic bark extract of Mimusops elengi was investigated for its possible analgesic and neuropharmacological activities on mice at the doses of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg body weight. For the evaluation of analgesic activity, tail immersion and acetic acid induced writhing tests were used. The neuropharmacological activity of the extract was screened using hole cross and open field ...

Marine natural products have been the focus of discovery for new products of chemical and pharmacological interest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of the methanolic (ME), acetate (AE), hexanic (HE) and chloroform (CE) extracts obtained from Caulerpa mexicana, and ME, CE and HE obtained from Caulerpa sertularioides. These marine algae are found all over the wo...

A geometric invariant of a space curve, the writhing number, is defined and studied. For the central curve of a twisted cord the writhing number measures the extent to which coiling of the central curve has relieved local twisting of the cord. This study originated in response to questions that arise in the study of supercoiled double-stranded DNA rings.

The ethanol and water extracts of Sansevieria trifasciata leaves showed dose-dependent and significant (P < 0.05) increase in pain threshold in tail-immersion test. Moreover, both the extracts (100 - 200 mg/kg) exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of writhing and also showed a significant (P < 0.001) inhibition of both phases of the formalin pain test. The ethanol extract (200 mg/kg) significa...

Some of the chromophoric chain substituted hemicyaninocolourants (CCHCs) were synthesized and confirmed on the basis of nitrogen analysis. These were tested for their antinociceptive activity in albino rats against tail flick technique and sodium chloride induced writhing test. Test compounds were given in graded doses (10, 20 and 50 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) and compared with morphine and aspi...

Inflammation is associated with immune cells infiltrating into the inflammatory site and pain. CC chemokine receptor 1 (CCR1) mediates trafficking of leukocytes to sites of inflammation. However, the contribution of CCR1 to pain is incompletely understood. Here we report an unexpected discovery that CCR1-mediated trafficking of neutrophils and CCR1 activity on non-hematopoietic cells both modul...

AIMS Pain depresses expression of many behaviors, and one goal of analgesic treatment is to restore pain-depressed behaviors. Assays that focus on pain-depressed behaviors may contribute to preclinical assessment of candidate analgesics. MAIN METHODS This study compared effects of the mu opioid receptor agonist morphine (an acknowledged analgesic), the dopamine receptor antagonist haloperidol...
