In this Letter, we make an attempt to estimate the masses of black holes and their distributions in BL Lac objects. We show the mass of black hole MBH ∝ ν −13/12 pk L 3/8 pk , where νpk and Lpk are the peak frequency and luminosity in the first bump of continuum, respectively. We find there are two populations of black hole masses in BL Lacs: the first has a lower-mass peak centred at ∼ 7.0× 10...

BALB/c mice immunized with bacterial levan (BL) produce an immune response that fails to generate antibody expressing the idiotype (Id) of the beta (2 leads to 6) fructosan-binding myeloma protein ABPC 48 (A48). Pretreatment of newborn BALB/c mice (at 1 d of age) with 0.01-10 microgram of affinity purified BALB/c anti-A48 Id antibody followed by immunization with BL 1-2 mo later produces an ant...

We present the results of near–infrared H band (1.65 μm) imaging of 11 BL Lac objects with redshifts ranging from z = 0.05 to 0.9. We are able to clearly detect the host galaxy in seven low redshift (z≤0.24) BL Lacs, while the four unresolved BL Lacs have either high or unknown redshift. The galaxies hosting the low redshift BL Lacs are large (average bulge scale length R(e) = 8.8±9.9 kpc) and ...

We measured stimulant-induced changes of exocytosis that are associated with increases in Cl secretion (i.e., short circuit current, ISC, in microA/cm2) and apical (ap) Cl permeability (PCl) and basolateral (bl) K permeability (PK) (both in cm/s) in T84 monolayers. PCl and PK were measured by permeabilizing the bl or ap membrane with nystatin. PCl was also measured with a fluorescent dye 6-meth...

Mouse PTP-BL is a large, nontransmembrane protein tyrosine phosphatase of unclear physiological function that consists of a KIND domain, a FERM domain, five PDZ domains, and a COOH-terminal catalytic PTP domain. PTP-BL and its human ortholog PTP-BAS have been proposed to play a role in the regulation of microfilament dynamics, cytokinesis, apoptosis, and neurite outgrowth. To investigate the bi...

The antioxidative and hypolipidemic effects of barley leaf essence (BL) were investigated in a rabbit model of atherosclerosis. Twenty-four New Zealand White male rabbits were assigned randomly into four dietary groups. The normal group was fed regular rabbit chow and the control group was fed a chow containing 0.5% cholesterol and 10% corn oil. The BL group and the probucol group were fed the ...

Available evidence suggests that, among hematological malignancies, p53 is most often mutated in Burkitt's lymphoma (BL). However, much of the published data is based on cell lines. We have, therefore, analyzed BL biopsies to determine more accurately the frequency and pattern of p53 mutations in primary tumors and to determine whether there are differences among the various subtypes of BL. Amo...

Twenty bladder biopsies from patients with primary transitional cell carcinoma were inoculated into nude mice. To date, eleven of these have grown as primary implants and three serially transplantable xenograft lines (UCRU-BL-12, UCRU-BL-13, UCRU-BL-14) have been established. The histological and ultrastructural features of human transitional cell carcinoma have been maintained in each line. De...

APO-1 is a cell surface molecule that induces apoptosis when ligated with the monoclonal antibody anti-APO-1. Expression of APO-1 and response to anti-APO-1 was investigated in a number of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive and -negative Burkitt lymphoma (BL) cell lines, in EBV-immortalized lymphoblastoid cell lines, and in cells from fresh BL biopsies. APO-1 was not expressed in EBV-negative ce...

We tested the hypothesis that markers of coagulation activation are greater during lower body negative pressure (LBNP) than those obtained during blood loss (BL). We assessed coagulation using both standard clinical tests and thrombelastography (TEG) in 12 men who performed a LBNP and BL protocol in a randomized order. LBNP consisted of 5-min stages at 0, -15, -30, and -45 mmHg of suction. BL i...
