OBJECTIVE Associations between the outcome of 24 h ambulatory monitoring and cognitive performance were studied in order to evaluate the potential relevance of ambulant blood pressure status to brain function. It was hypothesized that a small daytime-night-time difference in mean blood pressure (nondipping) is associated with reduced cognitive performance, in line with studies in hypertensive s...
BACKGROUND Post-anaesthesia care units (PACUs) with 24/7 activity and consequently artificial light and noise may disturb the sleep of patients who require prolonged medical supervision. After one postoperative night, we compared sleep quality in patients with and without noise (earplug) and light (eye mask) protection. METHODS After ethical board approval, 46 patients without any neurologica...
PURPOSE Impaired left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) and the presence of microalbuminuria indicate early cardiac and renal dysfunction. We aimed to determine the relationships among 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) variables, LV GLS, and urine albumin creatinine ratio (UACR) in hypertensive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 130 hypertensive patients (mean age 53...
AIMS The long QT syndrome is mainly defined by QT interval prolongation (QTc > 0.44s). However, data obtained in genotyped patients showed that resting QTc measurement alone may be inaccurate for ascertaining the phenotype. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of QT interval rate-dependence in untreated chromosome 11-linked patients. METHODS The study population co...
BACKGROUND Although studies have documented the association between heart rate variability (HRV) and ambient particulate exposures, the association between HRV, especially at night, and metal-rich, occupational particulate exposures remains unclear. OBJECTIVE Our goal in this study was to investigate the association between long-duration HRV, including nighttime HRV, and occupational PM(2.5) ...
1481 ALERTNESS AND PERFORMANCE DURING NIGHT WORK CAN BE SERIOUSLY IMPAIRED.1,2 THIS OCCURS BECAUSE THE MASTER CIRCADIAN CLOCK OF MOST night workers, which controls the bodys circadian rhythms (e.g., alertness, temperature, melatonin), does not shift to realign with a night work, day sleep schedule.3 A sharp increase in sleepiness and decrease in performance occurs around the minimum of the cir...
We administer an online Guessing Game collecting responses across all 24 h of the day. While time-of-day itself does not affect guesses, when including trait-level sleepiness and previous night sleep, adverse sleep states lead to responses significantly farther from equilibrium.
Background & Aim: Night work could cause various disturbances in physiological, social and familial function because of changes in biological rhythms. Obesity which is associated with the increased risk of some disorders is considered as a possible adverse effect of night work in some studies. This study aims to determine the relationship between night work and anthropometric indices among nu...
After sleep deprivation, the blunting of the normal sleep-related growth-hormone (GH) pulse is compensated during the day. Consequently, the amount of GH secreted during a 24 h period is similar whether or not a person has slept during the night. These results argue against the belief that sleep disorders in children can inhibit growth through a daily GH deficit.
Floral nectar is an important attractant and reward for visitors, often produced in synchrony with peak activity of pollinators. Aloe peglerae flowers winter, previous studies have shown that it pollinated primarily by diurnal generalist birds, small mammals making additional contributions to pollination at night. Nectar during the day main but rewards available are unknown. This paper investig...
