Thirty two anaerobic bacterial strains were screened for their in vitro inhibitory activity toward 21 Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains, including two penicillin-resistant strains. From this screening, six anaerobic bacteria belonging to the genera Bacteroides, Peptostreptococcus, and Eubacterium were selected for their large antigonococcal spectrum of activity. The inhibitory activity of these six...

The new penem antibiotic HRE 664 displays potent antibacterial activity in vitro against a broad spectrum of clinically relevant bacterial strains including Gram-negative and Gram-positive aerobes and anaerobes. With an MIC 90% of 0.43 micrograms/ml, it is also active against methicillin-resistant staphylococci. HRE 664 is extremely stable against beta-lactamases, it binds preferentially to the...

A rod-shaped gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, strain HE8, was isolated from human feces. The isolate was able to convert the isoflavones daidzein and genistein to equol and 5-hydroxy-equol, respectively. Based on phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain HE8 is described as a new species, Slackia isoflavoniconvertens.

TF-218(T) is the type strain of the species Phaeobacter daeponensis Yoon et al. 2007, a facultatively anaerobic Phaeobacter species isolated from tidal flats. Here we describe the draft genome sequence and annotation of this bacterium together with previously unreported aspects of its phenotype. We analyzed the genome for genes involved in secondary metabolite production and its anaerobic lifes...

The analysis of the 4.1-Mb draft genome sequence of a moderately thermophilic, heterotrophic, and facultatively anaerobic bacterium, Bacillus subtilis strain D7XPN1, identified genes for a range of enzymes with potential in the biodegradation of food waste, a property consistent with the ecological habitat of the isolate.

Clostridium sporogenes is a harmless spore-forming anaerobe that is widely distributed in soil/water and in the intestines of humans and animals. It is extensively used as a safe model to test the suitability of new preservative methods by the food industry and has potential to deliver therapeutic agents to tumors.

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Gottschalkia purinilyticum (formerly Clostridium purinilyticum) WA1, an anaerobic bacterium specialized on degradation of purines (including adenine) and glycine, which uses the selenoprotein glycine reductase for substrate degradation. The genome consists of a single chromosome (3.40 Mb).

We developed a simple, less laborious method to cultivate and isolate obligate anaerobic microorganisms using a six-well plate together with the AnaeroPack System, designated as the six-well plate method. The cultivation efficiency of this method, based on colony-forming units, colony formation time, and colony size, was evaluated with four authentic obligate anaerobes (two methanogenic archaea...

Benzene is a widespread and toxic contaminant. The fate of benzene in contaminated aquifers seems to be primarily controlled by the abundance of oxygen: benzene is aerobically degraded at high rates by ubiquitous microorganisms, and the oxygen-dependent pathways for its breakdown were elucidated more than 50 years ago. In contrast, benzene was thought to be persistent under anoxic conditions un...

Anaerobic bacteria are important pathogens in many different infections. Empiric antimicrobial therapy is frequently used in the treatment of anaerobic infections as it might take several days for bacterial cultures to grow and, in many cases, the patient needs care without delay. The patient’s condition and the nature of the infecting microorganisms are of extreme importance.Since anaerobic in...
