Development of the ocular anterior segment involves a series of inductive interactions between neural ectoderm, surface ectoderm and periocular mesenchyme. The timing of these events is well established but less is known about the molecular mechanisms involved. Various genes that participate in these processes have been identified. As the roles of more genes are determined, developmental pathwa...

Peters' anomaly is usually a sporadic or autosomal recessive condition. We present three families whose members had dominantly inherited anterior segment anomalies with variable expression, including typical Peters' anomaly in at least one family member. Slit-lamp examination of parents and family members of children with Peters' anomaly is therefore important to exclude dominant inheritance.

Instruments designed primarily for vitreous surgery were used in 74 anterior segment operations. In each case the instrument was introduced into the eye through a limbal incision. This preliminary report shows that this new approach offers several advantages over conventional methods in selected cases. It is of particular value in the management of presenile and complicated cataracts and in the...

OBJECTIVES To compare the anterior ocular segment biometry among Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) with no diabetic retinopathy (DR) and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), and to evaluate the correlation of anterior ocular segment biometry with HbA1c level. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kelantan from November 2013 till May 2016 am...

PURPOSE To describe the corneal and anterior segment determinants of posterior corneal arc length (PCAL) and posterior corneal curvature (PCC). METHODS Cross-sectional, population-based study of 1069 subjects (1069 eyes) aged 40-80 years, from three major Asian ethnic groups. All underwent anterior segment optical coherence tomography imaging and analysis with Zhongshan Angle Assessment Progr...

The assessment of anterior segment structures has become an important consideration for the planning of ocular refractive and cataract surgery, as well as for diagnosing and treating glaucoma and assessing corneal health. This assessment is typically performed by means of slit lamp biomicroscopy in clinical applications. An objective quantitative assessment of anterior segment structures is not...

Exercise electrocardiography with or without thallium-201 scintigraphy was performed (pre-hospital discharge) in 66 asymptomatic survivors of a first inferior myocardial infarction (IMI). Although coronary angiography revealed an 82% incidence of multivessel coronary artery disease (MV-CAD) in the total cohort, the sensitivity of exercise ECG for MV-CAD in the group with absent anterior ST-depr...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the causes of inadvertent intraocular injuries resulting from the use of cannulas during anterior segment surgery. Method Retrospective review of all cases with inadvertent release of irrigation and viscoelastic cannulas during anterior segment surgery in 15 years. RESULTS Inadvertent release of cannulas occurred in 9 of 10 230 cases of anterior segment surgery during a ...
